St Mirren continued their impressive league form at Firhill with a 1-0 victory over Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership.

James Dayton scored a debut goal after just six minutes as St Mirren moved above Motherwell to third from bottom ahead of Saturday’s fixtures.

Dayton hooked a shot from 14 yards into the right corner of the net after the ball broke off the leg of a Thistle defender on the six-yard line at a St Mirren corner.

Ryan Stevenson had come close at the other end of the pitch a minute earlier when caught the ball on the bounce 20 yards from goal and forced St Mirren goalkeeper Mark Ridgers into a low diving save.

But Thistle were almost undone again after 31 minutes when Kenny McLean’s angled delivery from the St Mirren right almost found Steven Thompson drifting in at the back post.

At the other end Stevenson could only get his hair on the ball as he dived through the six-yard box trying to connect with a crisp Callum Booth cross, and seconds later Stephen O’Donnell had a fierce shot blocked by Ridgers at the near post from Kallum Higginbotham’s cut-back.

St Mirren responded as Jeroen Tesselaar won a tussle just outside the Partick penalty area and laid the ball inside to McLean to drive inches wide of the far post.

Steven Lawless then sent a deep cross to Higginbotham who laid the ball back to Stevenson but the Thistle winger pulled his shot wide through a defender’s legs.

After the break Booth found Lawless just inside the St Mirren box and he hit a shot on the turn, but Ridgers was well positioned to collect the ball with ease.

Kris Doolan then linked with Higginbotham at the edge of the penalty area but the latter drove his low shot wide of the target.

And Thistle almost levelled when a deep corner found Stevenson at the far side of the box and he lofted the ball back across the six-yard box where Frederic Frans got up above his marker, but his header hit Ridgers on the arm, with the keeper not appearing to know much about it.

Thistle continued to battle but they were unable to break down the visitors, who have not lost at the Glasgow venue in the league since November 2001.
