Marseille suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Midfielder Bernardo Silva picked the ideal time to score his first goal for Monaco to secure a 1-0 victory over Ligue 1 leaders Marseille.

The Portuguese 20-year-old, who joined on loan from Benfica in the summer, struck in the 67th minute to record Monaco's third successive league victory.

It meant Marseille missed a golden opportunity to capitalise on Paris St Germain's shock defeat at struggling Guingamp and remain just a point clear of the defending champions.

Anthony Martial provided a willing outlet for the hosts in the first half and, having been denied by Steve Mandanda, he set up Yannick Carrasco for an effort which the Marseille goalkeeper had to turn behind.

Dimitri Payet, with a curling effort inches off target, and Brice Dja Djedje, after neat inter-play between Florian Thauvin and Andre-Pierre Gignac, had Marseille's best efforts.

After the break Gignac was denied by Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic before Bernardo broke the deadlock.

Marseille had dominated possession but could not make it count and it costed them as, when Yannick Carrasco dummied Martial's cross, Bernardo fired home. Mandanda got a touch he could not keep out the shot.

Marseille struggled to muster a response with Payet's low 25-yard effort their best attempt and Monaco, who did the double over Marseille last season and who have now lost just once against them in six matches, closed the game stronger.

Andrea Raggi's header brushed the post, before Lucas Ocampos shot straight at Mandanda from a quick counter-attack.
