Metz were left frustrated as Rennes put a second dint in their home record this season.

Before Saturday night's Ligue 1 clash only Nantes had taken anything from the Stade Saint-Symphorien this season, and Rennes - with two successive away defeats - looked ripe for the taking.

But it did not turn out that way as the visitors more than held their own and went home with a 0-0 draw.

It was not for a lack of trying, with both sides getting chances - the first of which saw Modibo Maiga work away keeper Benoit Costil.

Rennes fashioned a chance of their own straight after, Pedro Henrique crossing for Mexer, but the Mozambique international saw his header scrape just wide.

Back came Metz and Sergey Krivets headed over the bar, while Guido Milan worked Costil again with a fine free-kick which the keeper did well to push away.

A lot of the chances were coming in the air and Henrique was the next one to use his head, and the next one to be off target, taking a Vincent Pajot cross and wasting it before the break.

Into the second half Maiga thought he was in when he got clear but the on-loan West Ham man did not account for Costil racing off his line to deny him.

Rennes responded and Kamil Grosicki worked Anthony Mfa with a free-kick, while Gelson Fernandes and Pedro Henrique both wasted opportunities as the game opened up.

If anyone was going to score as the game went on, Rennes were that team, and Henrique missed another chance when played in by Abdoulaye Doucoure, but that would be the last significant action.
