Bordeaux were left frustrated after struggling Caen earned a 1-1 Ligue 1 draw at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

Cheick Diabate had put the home side, who had been looking to move above Paris St Germain back into second place, ahead from the penalty spot on 21 minutes.

However, Bordeaux were punished for not putting the match beyond Caen, without a win in six league games heading into Sunday, when substitute Herve Bazile equalised 14 minutes from time.

There were early warning signs for Bordeaux when Caen forward Mathieu Duhamel floated a free-kick into the penalty area and Bengali-Fode Koita crashed a header off the post.

Bordeaux, defeated at home by Reims before the international break, went ahead after Jean Calve was penalised for handball and Diabate sent Caen goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre the wrong way from the spot.

Bazile, on after injury to Koita, forced Cedric Carrasso into a save after another penetrating run at the Bordeaux defence.

It should have been 2-0, however, just before half-time when Julien Faubert's effort was deflected over from close range following a corner.

Caen threatened again at the start of the second half when Carrasso palmed away Duhamel's effort.

Bordeaux almost doubled their lead just before the hour when Uruguay forward Diego Rolan's volley was hacked off the line by Yrondu Musavu-King.

On 75 minutes, another good stop from Carrasso denied a curling effort from Bazile.

The equaliser, though, soon followed when Bazile caught out the Bordeaux goalkeeper to clip the ball from a tight angle.

Lenny Nangis' 30-yard effort was saved by Carrasso, before Bordeaux substitute Wahbi Khazri dragged an effort across goal and it ended all square.
