Andre-Pierre Gignac lifted the pressure on new Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa as his goal gave them their first win of the season, 1-0 over Guingamp at the Stade Municipal de Roudourou.

Bielsa was booed off last week when his first home game ended in a 2-0 loss to Montpellier, but could celebrate three points on Saturday, with Gignac's 46th-minute goal the reward for a dominant display short only of more clinical finishing.

The first half was one-way traffic as Marseille piled forward.

The match was only seven minutes old when Florian Thauvin went through on goal one-on-one, but Mamadou Samassa made the save.

Four minutes later, Thauvin flicked on Gilbert Imbula Wanga's cross to Dimitri Payet, but he sent his shot over the crossbar.

Samassa then made an excellent save to deny Gignac in the 20th minute, a fantastic full-stretch dive enough to get to a rising shot after the striker had beaten Lionel Mathis to break into the area.

Gignac then saw a header brush the top of the crossbar after Payet flicked on Benjamin Mendy's cross.

In spite of all those chances, the match was goalless at half-time, but Gignac needed only 16 seconds to change that after the break.

Payet broke down the left and crossed for Gignac to strike a fierce volley into the net.

Gignac might have added a second in the 68th minute as he led a swift count-attack, beating Christophe Kerbrat but sending his shot from distance into the side-netting.

Guingamp finally woke up as the match moved into the final 15 minutes and substitute Reynald Lemaitre struck the crossbar in the 80th minute after firing Steve Mandanda's punched clearance straight back towards goal.

But it was Marseille who had the final attack, led by Michy Batshuayi before Mendy's shot brushed the crossbar on its way over.
