Relegation-threatened Sassuolo claimed a much-needed point from a 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

Relegation-threatened Sassuolo claimed a much-needed point from a 1-1 draw against Cagliari at Stadio Citta del Tricolore on Saturday. Returning Cagliari coach Ivo Pulga saw his side trailing in his first match back at the helm after Simone Zaza put the home side ahead eight minutes before the break, but an Agim Ibrahimi penalty at the start of the second half clinched a point for the visitors. The result sees Sassuolo remain second bottom in the standings, but just two points from safety, while the Sardinian outfit are now eight points clear in 15th ahead of Sunday's action. The away side had the best opening chance as Ibrahimi found Daniele Dessena inside the box, who sent in a low cross for Victor Ibarbo at the near post - but his close-range effort sailed inches wide. Sassuolo finally got going midway through the first half but Cagliari keeper Vlada Avramov comfortably caught Domenico Berardi's curling shot, before his free-kick from the edge of the visitors' box was fired high over the bar. The home side took the lead after 37 minutes as Nicola Sansone picked out Zaza in the centre of the penalty box, who made no mistake with his left-footed effort hitting the roof of the net. Two minutes after the break Cagliari struck back with an equaliser as the referee awarded a penalty after Luca Antei brought down Victor Ibarbo inside his own area. Ibrahimi struck the ball with his left foot and slotted it into the bottom right of the goal with stopper Gianluca Pegolo well beaten. As the match approached the hour mark, Ibrahimi could have doubled the lead for the away side, had his close-range shot not gone wide. But Sassuolo began to dominate moments later and had a string of chances to take the lead for a second time, two from Antonio Floro Flores, whose long-range effort went over the bar before a shot from the 18-yard box was just wide of the post. Luca Antei and Simone Missiroli were next to have a go before they too fired the ball just off target, and Zaza's volley from just outside the box failed to find the net as the match wore on and both sides had to settle for a point.
