Rennes celebrate against Lyon

Rennes turned the formbook on its head to see off Lyon 2-0 in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The hosts were winless in six league outings coming into the contest at Stade de la Route de Lorient, and up against a Lyon side on a run of six straight wins in all competitions - and unbeaten since going down 4-0 at Paris St Germain on December 1.

Yet those statistics were undermined as goals either side of the break from Cedric Hountondji and Ola Toivonen saw off a lacklustre Lyon, who were not helped by a straight red card shown to Samuel Umtiti just before half-time.

Abdoulaye Doucoure was the first to go close for the hosts inside just three minutes as his effort from the edge of the area forced Anthony Lopes into a routine stop.

Clement Grenier - the target of a failed bid from Newcastle last week - then sent over a couple of teasing free-kicks that had Rennes in trouble but both times Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil averted the danger.

The opener arrived from a set-piece on 22 minutes when Romain Alessandrini's corner was met by the towering Hountondji, who nodded in at the near post to register his first Ligue 1 goal.

And Rennes' position was strengthened still further in the 41st minute when Umtiti went crunching into Alessandrini with an ugly challenge and the referee brandished the red card.

Rennes were denied a second in the 56th minute when Sylvain Armand's effort from close range was somehow kept out by Lopes, but the game was put to bed 10 minutes later when Doucoure's cross was collected by Toivonen and he drilled home low into the net.
