Bordeaux got over their humiliating midweek Coupe de France defeat to L'Ile Rousse with an impressive 2-0 win against St Etienne at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

Following that embarrassing exit, the home fans demanded a response and goals from Abdou Traore and Brazilian defender Henrique helped appease the disgruntled Bordeaux faithful.

Victory for Francis Gillot's men, their first in four in Ligue 1 matches, saw them rise three places to sixth in the table for the time being at least with Marseille due to visit Monaco in the day's late game.

St Etienne were left to rue missing the opportunity of closing the gap on third-placed Lille and, in doing so, suffered their first defeat in more than a month.

The hosts began on the front foot and Traore went close very early on after he met Nicolas Maurice-Belay's delivery but Les Girondins had to settle for a corner.

Then Franck Tabanou fired a direct free-kick over Cedric Carrasso's bar before Gregory Sertic's dangerous delivery clipped a post at the other end for the hosts.

With the surface proving tricky for both players following some heavy rain, clear-cut opportunities in front of goal were few and far between but Bordeaux managed to find a breakthrough with the interval just 5 minutes away.

Les Girondins hit St Etienne on the counter and - after Henri Saivet picked him out from the right - Traore controlled before drilling an unstoppable shot beyond Stephane Ruffier to give his side a half-time advantage.

Bordeaux wasted no time in adding to their tally after the interval and, after Sertic's corner corner caused a scramble inside the visitors' area, Henrique was on hand to smash the ball home from close range.

Sertic continued to look dangerous fot the hosts and he had Ruffier worrying with an hour played when his direct free-kick threatened to finish up just inside the right post.

St Etienne made a late surge to try to get back in the game and thought they had done so when Mevlut Erding rounded Carrasso to score only for play to be pulled back for offside.

Carrasso was called upon late on when Erding picked out Benjamin Corgnet but his header was superbly kept out by the former Marseille shot-stopper and Bordeaux survived to claim all three points.
