Siem de Jong: Called up by Holland

Holland boss Louis van Gaal has called up Ajax captain Siem de Jong for Wednesday night's friendly against France in Paris.

The 25-year-old midfielder has won six caps for Holland since making his debut in 2010 and comes in for the injured Rafael van der Vaart, who has withdrawn from the squad due to illness.

Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm is also sidelined by illness while Arjen Robben is doubtful with a thigh injury he sustained during Bayern Munich's 5-1 victory over Schalke on Saturday.

Robben told De Telegraaf ahead of the sold-out clash at the Stade de France: "I'm frustrated that this injury occurred during the match against Schalke.

"I hurt. It would be better not to take risks with me."

Wesley Sneijder is hoping he can prove his worth against France and stake a claim in Van Gaal's 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup finals.

The 96-cap midfielder told telegraaf.nl: "I just enjoy playing football. I know what to do, even if the world is watching."

Holland take on Spain, Australia and Chile in Group B in June and Sneijder is confident of their chances, adding: "I truly believe that we have a team that can rise above itself....with good attacking and an attractive game."

France secured their place in Brazil in a dramatic play-off against Ukraine in November, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit with a 3-0 win at home.

Wednesday will be their first game since then and coach Didier Deschamps wants a repeat of their last performance.

Deschamps told L'Equipe: "Even though it is only a friendly, we have to keep the thread and continue what we did on November 19.

"But not just for Wednesday, afterwards as well... especially afterwards."

Perhaps with that in mind, Deschamps has named a near-unchanged squad, with Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann and Paris St Germain full-back Lucas Digne the only uncapped players.

Nevertheless, the former Marseille coach insists places remain up for grabs ahead of the World Cup.

"I am also paying attention to those who are not here but could still join the squad for May 23," he said.

"We cannot say what will happen between now and then, there are plenty of possibilities."
