Falcao's equaliser earned Monaco a point
Monaco missed the chance to move level on points with Paris St Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 standings as they were surprisingly held 1-1 at home by Evian.
The big-spending hosts had won five of their six home matches this season coming into the fixture but, despite star striker Radamel Falcao quickly cancelling out Daniel Wass's 21st-minute opener for Evian, Monaco could not find a winner against their mid-table opponents.
Claudio Ranieri's side were looking to get back on track after suffering their first loss of the season to Lille last weekend but they started slowly and Evian striker Cedric Barbosa drew a save out of Danijel Subasic in the first minute before Wass put the visitors ahead.
A long punt forward from goalkeeper Jesper Hansen was headed on by Modou Sougou to Wass near the penalty area, and he took the ball past Eric Abidal before volleying a right-footed shot beyond Subasic.
Evian were ahead for just six minutes though before the prolific Falcao drew the teams level. The former Atletico Madrid striker brought down a cross from fellow Colombia international James Rodriguez and drilled a shot past Hansen.
Monaco almost snatched the lead on the stroke of half-time with a brilliant effort from Jeremy Toulalan, but his volley from the edge of the area brushed the left post as it went wide and the teams went into the break still on level terms.
Both sides had chances to score in the second half, with Evian going close through Sougou who took advantage of some poor defending between Abidal and Ricardo Carvalho before firing in a shot that Subasic did well to keep out.
Hansen then earned his wages at the other end to keep out another Toulalan shot from outside the box in the 72nd minute, and then play swept back down the pitch and Subasic was called on again to deny Dan Nistor.
It was the same story in the 83rd minute with Subasic slapping away a Nistor strike and at that stage it looked like Monaco were hanging on.
However, the home side came agonisingly close to snatching all three points themselves when Lucas Ocampos saw his 87th-minute thunderbolt smash against the crossbar.
