Alan and Ronnie Stam: Battle for the ball

Salzburg maintained their 100 per cent record in Europa League Group C as they claimed a 3-1 win over Standard Liege which confirmed their place in the last 32.

The home side had the better of the early stages but two goals late in the first half from Dusan Svento and Kevin Kampl gave the Austrians the edge at the break.

Standard pulled one back after the interval through Paul-Jose M'Poku but a stunning strike from Alan sealed the win for Salzburg and sent the Belgians out of the competition.

Kampl brought a save out of Yohann Thuram-Ulien in the first minute but it was the hosts who made the brighter start.

The Belgian side won an early corner as they applied some pressure and just moments later Peter Gulacsi had to make a smart save with his feet from Michy Batshuayi.

Imoh Ezekiel also fired wide but Standard could not make their early pressure tell as Salzburg grew into the game.

The Austrians had weathered the early storm but Gulacsi had to make another save from Batshuayi before Valon Berisha had their best chance so far in the 38th minute bringing a sprawling save from Thuram-Ulien.

Four minutes later Salzburg had the lead as Alan held off the attentions of Laurent Ciman and provided a cross for Svento to fire home from six yards.

The lead was barely deserved but they doubled it in first-half stoppage time with Svento playing provider this time as he found Kempl in the centre of the penalty area to stroke home.

Standard could have been forgiven for feeling hard done by but they were back in contention just 10 minutes after the break as a Ronnie Stam free-kick found its way to M'Poku and who fired home his own rebound from inside the penalty area.

But Salzburg restored their two-goal cushion just three minutes later in spectacular fashion with Valon Berisha supplying the cross which Alan acrobatically volleyed into the back of the net.

That goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Belgians and Salzburg had the better of the latter stages as they maintained their perfect record.
