Notts County saw off Burton 1-0 at Meadow Lane in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern section.
On-loan Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor scored the only goal as Notts County saw off Burton 1-0 in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern section. The Magpies have garnered just a solitary point from their opening five League One fixtures but they secured their second win in eight games in all competitions with victory at Meadow Lane. There were few chances in the opening exchanges but Burton goalkeeper Dean Lyness had to be alert when Yoann Arquin headed towards goal while McGregor shot over from 12 yards. But on-loan Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor gave County the lead five minutes before half-time when he let fly with a low shot from 20 yards which beat Lyness down to his left. Mark Fotheringham volleyed powerfully wide for the Magpies before Burton rallied, with Damien McCrory's curling free-kick bringing the best out of goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski on the hour mark. Ian Sharps nodded wide from Jack Dyer's corner and substitute Rene Howe's clever flick was well blocked by Bialkowski as Burton turned up the heat but County held on.
