Monaco's 100 per cent start to the season came to a disappointing end when Claudio Ranieri's men were held to a goalless draw at home to Toulouse.

The hosts were forced to play the game behind closed doors after last season's match against Le Mans was marred by crowd trouble and the hosts struggled to break down Le Tefece in an empty Stade Louis II.

A solitary point was enough to take the principality club a point clear at the top of Ligue 1 but with rivals Lyon, Marseille and St Etienne all still to play over the course of the weekend, that lead could prove to be short-lived.

Toulouse's disappointing start to the season continued as Alain Casanova's men remain winless in their first three games, but the visitors' boss will take heart from a point gained.

Monaco began the game well and last week's hat-trick hero Emannuel Riviere could have had a brace in the opening 20 minutes.

Playing against his former club, the 23-year-old striker was presented with a great opportunity to open the scoring but dragged his shot wide of the post with only Ali Ahamada to beat.

Moments later another opportunity fell Riviere's way and this time the Frenchman found the target but Ahamada was equal to it on his own goal-line.

Monaco continued to press and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco should have scored when Ahamada parried a cross into his path, but the Belgian fired over the bar from close range.

With half-time approaching Toulouse began to apply some pressure and an opportunity fell to Oscar Trejo just inside the area, but the Argentinian striker failed to find the target from a promising position.

Chances for both teams were few and far between in the second half but late on the game sprang back into life as the hosts went close on a couple of occasions, with substitute James Rodriguez a lively presence.

Radamel Falcao fired a free-kick straight at Ahamada before Jeremy Toulalan was unlucky to see a 30-yard rocket cannon back off the crossbar.

Toulouse's Serge Aurier had a chance to win it deep into stoppage time but Danijel Subasic saved bravely at his feet and both sides were made to settle for the draw.
