Giuseppe De Luca grabs a late leveller for Atalanta
Giuseppe De Luca earned Atalanta a point with a late goal in a 1-1 draw with 10-man Genoa at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia
The Nerazzurri looked for a long time to be heading to a home defeat after Paolo De Ceglie gave the visitors a 27th-minute advantage.
Denis was denied from the spot by Mattia Perin after Daniele Portanova was given his marching orders, but Atalanta's pressure finally told when De Luca struck eight minutes from time.
Andrea Bertolacci struck the post with the first shot of the game in the 12th minute while Ioannis Fetfatzidis scrambled on a loose ball but saw his angled shot pushed behind by Andrea Consigli during a bright opening from the guests.
Their reward came in the 27th minute when De Ceglie scored his first goal for the Grifone, putting the finishing touch to an excellent team move with a strong header from Luca Antonelli's cross
Atalanta squandered their best chance of the half in the 38th minute when Guglielmo Stendardo tried to find Giacomo Bonaventura, who was in an offside position and missed the target anyway from close range.
The hosts were furious at the referee for several decisions which did not go their way, including some cheap yellow cards, and this may have contributed to his decision to point to the spot and send Portanova off when he made the slightest of contacts with Denis.
The Argentinian took the penalty himself, but Perin guessed right to push his effort away in the 50th minute.
Denis missed an even better chance midway through the second half when he had only Perin to beat from seven yards out, but sent his free header over the crossbar.
Atalanta increased the pressure on their 10-man opponents and Bonaventura just missed the target in the 77th minute before they finally found an equaliser five minutes later.
Stendardo's shot was saved by Perin, but De Luca stretched to turn the loose ball over the line from close range.
Genoa wanted a penalty of their own in the final minute when Alberto Gilardino crashed to the ground inside the penalty area, but the only whistle they heard from the referee came to bring the action to an end.
