Jos Luhukay left his old stomping ground with a point after Augsburg and Hertha Berlin played out a goalless stalemate.

Hertha coach Luhukay led the Bavarian side to their first promotion to the Bundesliga in 2011 but dropped down a division to join the Berliners, leading them back to the top flight after they had been relegated.

His two former clubs are stuck between the danger of relegation and the promise of European qualification and almost inevitably the match had a pre-season feeling about it.

The visitors were dealt a blow before kick-off when captain Fabian Lustenberger was forced to withdraw from the starting XI after suffering an injury in the warm-up - he was replaced by American defender John Anthony Brooks.

Brooks had little to faze him in the opening half with Hertha creating the best effort of the game with Sandro Wagner forcing Marwin Hitz into a save at his near post.

In the 33rd minute, Augsburg's South Korean defender Hong Heong-jo headed against the woodwork from Tobias Werner's free-kick in the clearest opening for the hosts.

Swiss goalkeeper Hitz remained in between the sticks for the second 45 minutes after picking up a knock, but he had minimal work to do as both sides looked content with bumping up their points tally by one.
