Borussia Monchengladbach's six-game winning streak was brought to an end by Mainz, who held Lucien Favre's men to a 0-0 draw at the Coface Arena on Saturday. After a tense and tight first half, both sides let their hair down a little in the second half but all that was missing was a goal. Gladbach had more drive going forward but they were unable to find a winner and also risked losing as Mainz threatened several times on the break, leaving both sides satisfied with a point. Coaches Thomas Tuchel and Favre have both developed reputations for being tactically astute and it was no surprise that it was a tight game with very few openings. Neither side wanted to reveal their cards, with chances therefore few and far between in the first half. The few chances fell for the visitors, who showed a touch more confidence given their six-game winning streak, and a Juan Arango free-kick only just missed the target midway through the half. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting sent a shot over early in the second half as the game showed the first signs of opening up, and that proved to be the case as Gladbach went close through Julian Korb. The visitors started to gamble more and they were nearly punished when Yunus Malli shot over, but the better chances fell for Gladbach with Max Kruse going closest of all, shooting over from Patrick Herrmann's pass 15 minutes from time.
