Augsburg left it late to beat Freiburg 2-1 and set a new club record in the Bundesliga with a third consecutive win.

Augsburg left it late to take all three points against Freiburg and set a new club record in the Bundesliga with a third consecutive win. Halil Altintop and Tobias Werner supplied the goals for Markus Weinzierl's men, who came from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory after Admir Mehmedi gave Freiburg the lead moments after taking to the field. Defeat leaves Freiburg in trouble at the foot of the Bundesliga and is hardly the best preparation for their return to Europe this week. Raphael Holzhauser wasted the first chance of the game in the sixth minute when he lost his nerve in a one-on-one situation with Oliver Baumann, the Freiburg goalkeeper coming out on top. That was about it as far as goalmouth action in the first half was concerned and it was hardly surprising that Freiburg coach Christian Streich brought on two fresh faces at the start of the second half. One of them was Mehmedi, who picked up possession immediately, dribbled his way past two Augsburg defenders before sending an unstoppable shot past Alexander Manninger. The goal gave Freiburg hope, but after weathering the storm, Augsburg regained the ascendancy, levelling through Altintop after an hour's play. He was teed up by Holzhauser with Sascha Molders not getting in the way as the Turkey international left Baumann no chance. It was Augsburg's turn to attack with confidence and they built up a head of steam as Freiburg retreated. Time was ticking down, though, and it did not look like Augsburg were going to get the goal they were searching for until Werner pulled the trigger from outside the penalty area to spark scenes of joy in the Augsburg Arena, and dismay on the Freiburg bench.
