Guingamp celebrates Mustapha Yatabare's late goal
Guingamp further eased their relegation fears with a 2-0 victory over Rennes that sees them leapfrog their Brittany rivals into 13th place in the Ligue 1 standings.
Thibault Giresse's superb 39th-minute volley set Guingamp on their way and Mustapha Yatabare sealed the triumph with a stoppage-time penalty at the end of the game.
The victory is Guingamp's second on the trot having last time out ended a 10-match winless streak with a 1-0 triumph over Nice, and they are now 10 points above the relegation places and one point better off than Rennes.
The match could have been very different, though, if Romain Alessandrini's eighth-minute strike from the edge of the box had found the back of the net instead of smashing against the Guingamp crossbar.
Guingamp took full advantage of the escape, with Yayabare twice testing Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil as they took control of the game before Rachid Alioui brought another good save out of the home keeper after Claudio Beauvue's header had been cleared off the line.
A Guingamp goal was coming and it arrived six minutes before the break when Jonathan Pereira released Alioui, whose cross was met on the edge of the box by a brilliant first-time volley from Giresse which flashed past Costil.
The visitors picked up where they left off in the second half, with Beauvue firing just wide from 20 yards out, before Rennes finally started to threaten again as an attacking force.
Paul-Georges Ntep's curling shot was punched clear by Mamadou Samassa, who also saved from substitute Kamil Grosicki at the expense of a corner with eight minutes to go.
Grosicki also went close with another effort but Rennes could not find an equaliser, and Guingamp wrapped up the points four minutes into stoppage time through Yatabare's penalty, awarded for a foul by Costil on Younousse Sankhare.
