Benjamin Stambouli celebrates for Montpellier

An injury-time equaliser by Benjamin Stambouli prevented Valenciennes from claiming their second win of the season as they drew 1-1 with Montpellier in Ligue 1.

Valenciennes had secured their first victory since the opening day of the campaign last week when they beat Ajaccio and appeared on course to add to their tally on Saturday when they entered injury-time at the end of the game leading through Benjamin Angoua's goal after just seven minutes.

Montpellier, who had been reduced to 10 men when Mathieu Delplagne was given a straight red card after 73 minutes, broke their hosts' hearts though as Stambouli headed home for their second successive draw.

Valenciennes opened the scoring with the first meaningful attack of the match.

Mathieu Dossevi's corner from the right was missed by Gary Kagelmacher at the near post only for team-mate Angoua to volley home from the penalty spot.

However, Montpellier almost capitalised on a mistake by Nicolas Penneteau after a quarter of an hour when the keeper left his line and misjudged Remy Cabella's inswinging corner.

Tongo Doumbia's 25-yard shot had visiting keeper Geoffrey Jourdren at full stretch as Valenciennes threatened again.

There was little else in the first half but four minutes after the break the hosts were indebted to Penneteau as he thwarted Victor Hugo Montano.

The hosts had a great chance to double their lead nine minutes later when Maor Melikson received the ball from Dossevi with only the goalkeeper to beat but his low, close-range shot was saved by Jourdren.

Montpellier then came within inches of levelling, Morgan Sanson's cross from the right was latched on to by Anthony Mounier but his header came back off the bar.

The visitors' task then became harder a minute later when Delplagne was sent off for a tackle from behind on Dossevi.

The clock was ticking down and the game was a minute into injury-time when Cabella delivered a corner from the left which found an unmarked Stambouli at the far post and he coolly headed home.
