Celebrations for Evian

Valenciennes remain rooted to the bottom of Ligue 1 as a goal by Pape Sougou nine minutes from time guided Evian to a vital 1-0 victory.

It was hard on the hosts who dominated the first half but their paucity in attack was epitomised by Opa N'Guette who sent a volley over the bar when he had the entire goal to aim at midway through the second half.

Ariel Jacobs' side still have just one win all season and their misery on Saturday will contrast with Evian who claimed their third to inch away from the relegation zone.

However, it was all Valenciennes in the first 45 minutes.

They had their first attack after just two minutes. Arthur Masuaku carried the ball up the left wing and released Mathieu Dossevi inside the penalty area who blocked the ball and fired a right-footed shot forcing goalkeeper Jesper Hansen to go down to block.

They came close again just seven minutes later. Anthony Le Tallec initiated a counter-attack before combining with Jean-Christophe Bahebeck who returned the ball for the former Liverpool player to shoot inches wide with the goalkeeper beaten.

Dossevi then turned provider, finding Tongo Doumbia near the penalty spot whose on-target volley was deflected away by defender Cedric Mongongu.

Minutes later Doumbia came close to opening the scoring when he was found by Marco Da Silva's free-kick from the right and the Mali midfielder sent his header inches wide.

Evian took until the 57th minute to show as an attacking force when Eric Tie Bi curled a 25-yard effort which goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau blocked.

The hosts then had a wonderful chance to go ahead eight minutes later when Le Tallec headed on Dossevi's corner but N'Guette blazed his volley over when the goal was open.

That was the last attack of note for Valenciennes and instead Evian threatened, Cambon's snap shot from Daniel Wass' cross thwarted by Penneteau.

However, that was the prelude to the visitors' goal. Benjamin Angoua's poor defensive header fell to an unmarked Sougou and he drilled home a fierce shot from close-range which left Penneteau with no chance.
