Mevlut Erding scored a late winner as Rennes opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a 2-1 victory against Reims. Vincent Pajot put the home side ahead in the eighth minute but saw his early score cancelled out just before half-time by Grzegorz Krychowiak. However, Erding ensured Rennes got their season off to a winning start when he slotted a low shot past Reims goalkeeper Kossi Agassa in the 84th minute. Reims almost took the lead in the sixth minute when Odair Fortes brought the ball up on the left and crossed toward the goal, where Gaetan Courtet volleyed, forcing Benoit Costil to make excellent reflex save. The visitors were left to rue that missed chance soon after as Pajot made them pay with a close-range volley to give Rennes the lead. Jonathan Pitroipa and Anders Konradsen worked well in midfield before freeing Pajot, who fired past Agassa with a brutal strike. Agassa blocked Kevin Theopile-Catherine just before the half hour mark but it was not the last action of the first period as Krychowiak levelled for Reims on the stroke of half-time. Floyd Ayite took a corner and fired the ball into the box where Krychowiak tapped it past Costil from close range. Both sides had chances after the break but it was Erding who made the telling contribution when he raced down the right wing and beat two defenders to place a low shot past Agassa. With little time left on the clock, Reims were unable to mount another meaningful attack as Rennes ensured their season started with a home victory.
