Iain Vigurs: Scored before half-time for Motherwell

Craig Slater capped a fine second-half fightback by Kilmarnock as they rallied from a goal down to beat Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park on Saturday.

Iain Vigurs' goal four minutes before the break looked set to propel the hosts to second in the table, but Rory McKenzie's goal midway through the second half was followed by Slater's superb strike deep into injury-time as Killie secured a precious three points to steer them further away from the Scottish Premiership relegation play-off spots.

They started well, with Robbie Muirhead's thumping effort forcing a good stop from Gunnar Nielsen on 13 minutes before Alexei Eremenko threaded a ball for McKenzie to chase only for Nielsen to respond well again and punch the ball away.

Motherwell's first real chance came when Craig Samson spilled John Sutton's free-kick, but Craig Reid was unable to force the loose ball home.

Craig Moore then headed over as the hosts warmed to their task and Robbie Muirhead was then called upon to clear off his own line as Lionel Ainsworth's corner threatened to sneak inside the post.

And Motherwell took a deserved lead through Vigurs on 41 - lashing home a low drive after his initial shot had been blocked.

He might have had a second three minutes later after beating two men, but his drive was high into the side-netting.

Motherwell continued to press after the break and Moore and Sutton both went close before Killie threatened on the break through Vitalijis Maksimenko - Stephen McManus doing well to charge down the danger.

A minute later Eremenko's swerving cross was punched over the bar by Nielsen as the visitors pushed for an equaliser, which duly arrived on 65 minutes - Jackson Irvine carrying the ball towards the area unchallenged before laying the ball into the path of McKenzie who calmly steered his shot home.

Both sides poured forwards for a winner as play was stretched in the closing stages and in injury time, after Rory McKenzie had been carried off on a stretcher, Eremenko chipped onto the bar.

But in the final move of the match, Slater was allowed to carry the ball towards the box before drilling a shot across the diving Nielsen and snatch the points for Kilmarnock.
