St Johnstone earned a 0-0 draw with Hibernian despite playing for over an hour with 10 men at Easter Road.

The visitors lost Patrick Cregg on 32 minutes following his over-the-ball challenge on Paul Cairney, seconds after he had replaced injured St Johnstone midfielder Murray Davidson.

Hibs enjoyed a sustained period of pressure at the start of the second half that had the visitors at full stretch but they failed to convert that dominance into a goal.

And referee Alan Muir waved away stoppage-time appeals for a penalty after Hibernian striker James Collins appeared to be bundled over by Brian Easton.

The home team had an early opportunity when former Saints playmaker Liam Craig's corner was met by Jordan Forster but the right-back bulleted a header over the bar.

Alan Mannus was called into action in the 20th minute to palm away Cairney's fierce drive from an angle inside the area after the playmaker was teed up by Forster.

Muir produced a yellow card to Scott Robertson after the Hibernian midfielder walked past the Saints defensive wall to prove it was not 10 yards from a free-kick.

St Johnstone created their first chance after going down to 10 men when David Wotherspoon's low front post cross was hit goal-ward by a combination of Paul Hanlon and Stevie May, and the latter was denied by Hibs keeper Ben Williams who blocked the rebound.

After the break Robertson's low cross into the box was directed towards his own goal by Gary McDonald, forcing Mannus to make a near-post save.

And a well worked free-kick saw Craig set up Ryan McGivern in the box but the defender's first-time shot was deflected just over by his former Hibs team-mate Wotherspoon.

Saints keeper Mannus then pulled off a stunning save in stoppage time to claw a Collins header away following a Forster cross.
