Fleetwood boosted their promotion hopes with a 2-0 win over Oxford as U's boss Gary Waddock tasted defeat in his first home match.

It was a third successive defeat for Oxford's head coach, whose side topped League Two in December but have now dropped out of the top seven for the first time this season.

David Ball fired Fleetwood in front in the 34th minute, with a simple tap-in at the far post after Jake Wright had missed Antoni Sarcevic's testing cross following a short corner.

And the impressive Sarcevic doubled their lead seven minuted after the break with a fierce 20-yard drive from a well-worked free-kick.

After a cagey opening, Graham Alexander's team soon created chances with Ryan Clarke getting down low to save from Sarcevic, and then Nathan Pond planting a free header wide from 10 yards from Josh Morris's cross.

David Connolly's saved shot on the turn was a rare threat to the visitors' goal.

Iain Hume should have added another for Fleetwood when clean through, but Clarke made a smart save at his feet.

Oxford had a bit more life in the second half when James Constable and Dave Kitson came off the bench, but they ended well beaten.
