Steve Craig: Headed wide early on
Russ Wilcox broke a Football League record for a new manager as his promotion-chasing Scunthorpe side drew 0-0 with Wycombe.
It stretched their unbeaten run to 24 games since he first took charge last November and beat the previous record of 23 set-up in the inaugural season of the League back in 1888/89 by William Sudell of Preston.
However, the draw meant Scunthorpe missed the chance to go back to the top of Sky Bet League Two after being held to the seventh draw in their last nine home games.
Looking for their first win in six games, it was relegation-threatened Wycombe who carved out the best two chances of the first half. First Steve Craig blazed a close-range header over the top and then Max Kretzschmar missed a golden chance when he turned on the edge of the six-yard box but lifted his shot high over. Both chances came from right-wing crosses that the home defence had failed to deal with.
At the other end Scunthorpe's only threat came from a series of corners. It was from one of these that Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram rescued his side with a fine double save at his near post to deny David Syers his 11th goal of the season.
Wilcox switched to a more attacking 3-4-3 formation early in the second half to try and boost his below-par side. It almost worked when some left-wing pressure resulted in a cross from Gary McSheffrey coming back into play off the bar.
But the move back-fired when McSheffrey then limped off with a hamstring problem in the 73rd minute leaving Scunthorpe to play out the game with 10 men having used all three of their substitutes.
