New signing David Connolly scored on his debut to help managerless Oxford to a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon at the Kassam Stadium.

Left-back Tom Newey's first goal for the club gave Oxford the lead in the 39th minute and Connolly's strike gave them a two-goal advantage, meaning Charlie Wyke's goal for the Dons was a mere consolation. Newey peeled off the near post to plant Danny Rose's corner into the top corner with a firm header to break the deadlock just before the break. Former Republic of Ireland international Connolly, 36, who has joined the U's on loan from Portsmouth, came off the bench for the second half, and just 11 minutes in he latched onto Newey's pass and clipped a superb chip over goalkeeper Ross Worner. The Dons, who had won their previous two games, pulled one back in the 75th minute with Wyke beating keeper Ryan Clarke from Danny Hylton's pass, after his first shot was saved. Hylton might have snatched an equaliser in stoppage time but headed wide under pressure from five yards. Victory brought the U's back-to-back home wins for the first time in 18 months, while the Dons are still waiting for their first point against Oxford after eight attempts.
