Shrimpers hit back to earn draw

Luke Prosser rescued a point for promotion-chasing Southend as they left Accrington with a 1-1 draw.

The defender, a doubt before the game due to a head injury, leapt highest to convert Kevan Hurst's corner in the 78th minute to share the spoils with Stanley. It had looked like the home side would grab all three points in their battle against the drop after Lee Naylor's cross from the right to the far post was turned into his own net by Mark Phillips from close range just after the hour mark. However, Stanley also had rookie goalkeeper Andrew Dawber to thank for keeping them in the game as the 19-year-old, on only his second league start, pulled off a number of superb saves. He pushed away a Michael Timlin first-half effort and then denied Timlin in a one-on-one with his legs just after the restart. Dawber also managed to scramble away Barry Corr's goalbound header as Southend looked to cement their play-off place. Stanley, with just two league defeats in 13 games, still had their opportunities and George Bowerman was guilty of missing a gilt-edged opening in the first half. The striker burst though but his first effort was saved by goalkeeper Dan Bentley before he fired the rebound over the open goal.
