Craig Westcarr: Walsall man halted Leyton Orient's winning run

Craig Westcarr struck late on to earn Walsall a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient and deny the hosts a ninth win a row in a game that saw a player from each side sent off.

David Mooney had fired the Os into the lead following Andy Butler's early red card and it looked to be plain sailing from thereon in, but Westcarr spoilt the party with a header 19 minutes from time.

Butler had nodded a Westcarr cross just off-target in the opening stages and he was at fault again in the 18th minute when his ugly challenge on Romain Vincelot saw him dismissed.

It took 20 minutes for Orient to make their advantage count, at which point Mooney, who had already dragged a great opening wastefully wide, capitalised on Lloyd James' poor punch to lash home.

Vincelot and Dean Cox wasted chances to double the lead after half time and the plucky visitors exacted retribution in the 71st minute, when Troy Hewitt nodded back across goal for Westcarr to find the net.

Richard O'Donnell had to be at his best to prevent first Kevin Lisbie and then Mathieu Baudry from snatching a dramatic winner at the death, but ultimately Walsall's resilience deservedly halted the League One leaders' run of victories and Vincelot's frustration earned him a red card for a second yellow late on.

Elsewhere, Peterborough used the result at Orient to cut their lead to just three points, as a Grant McCann penalty proved enough to seal a 1-0 win at Rotherham.

Sheffield United's miserable start to the season continued at Wolves, where they were beaten 2-0, and the Blades now sit rock bottom of English football's third tier.
