Kaspars Gorkss: Sent off for Reading

Reading boss Nigel Adkins declared that momentum is with his side in the Sky Bet Championship promotion race following their 3-1 win at fellow high-fliers QPR.

The Royals were excellent at Loftus Road, where they played out the final 18 minutes with 10 men after former R's defender Kaspars Gorkss was sent off.

Danny Williams put them ahead early on and, after Kevin Doyle equalised against his old club to draw QPR level, two goals in as many minutes early in the second half gave Reading the points.

Alex Pearce headed home from a corner before Garath McCleary's stunning strike from 25 yards.

"It was a great goal - a fantastic goal to win any game," said Adkins, who was also full of praise for his side after seeing them pick up a fifth win in their last seven games to turn up the pressure up on the top five in the Championship.

"Credit to the players. We showed great character to see the game out after the sending off and defended very well.

"It's seven games on the spin now that we've been able to stick with the same team. We started the season well but were without players for spells and that was a challenge.

"We've got a really good formation about ourselves, great spirit among the players and can score goals - as we demonstrated.

"We've got momentum with us, which is important, and everyone is working really hard for each other."

Adkins indicated that he may considering appealing against the straight red card Gorkss was given for a challenge on Junior Hoilett.

He said: "My initial reaction was that it was an unnecessary challenge but I've just seen video footage and it probably looks a bit controversial.

"I'm going to have to reflect on it. I've seen it once very quickly and need time to analyse it because the last thing you want to do is put in a fruitless appeal."

QPR assistant manager Kevin Bond bemoaned the west London side's poor defending after they missed the chance to close the gap on second-placed Burnley.

"As you might expect, we are hugely disappointed," he said.

"We should certainly have done something about the first two goals and for the third maybe we stood off him a bit.

"We've been very good defensively for most of the season and have now started shipping goals.

"That's coupled with the fact we have lost Charlie Austin and Matt Phillips. Charlie was guaranteeing us goals.

"The problem we've had has been not scoring goals and in trying to change that we have probably only succeeded in being more open.

"Where we were dependable, we are no longer dependable. But it's about how we react now - there are still a lot of games to go."

QPR remain third in the standings, four points behind Burnley after suffering their second successive defeat, while sixth-placed Reading are now six points behind them.

Bond added: "We need to group together now. We didn't get carried away when we were top of the league and doing okay. We've still got a good squad of players."
