  1. Southampton rescue a late point then with Fonte's header and you can't say it isn't deserved. The hosts were knocking at the door since Giaccherini's opener in the third minute, and a draw is the fair result really. Both sides should be relatively happy with the result.

  2. 89

Southampton sniff blood here and a Rodriguez effort is out for a corner.

  3. 88

A Southampton free-kick is defended poorly but it's a great delivery and Jose Fonte is first to it for the equaliser.

  4. 86

Adam Johnson again cuts inside and draws the foul from Gaston Ramirez.

  5. 85

Osvaldo should well have received a second yellow in as many minutes there after a late challenge, but the referee shows leniency and gives him a stern telling off.

  6. Osvaldo's not having the happiest of debuts, a foul on Diakite heralds a booking.

  7. 81

Final Sunderland sub as Wickham replaces goalscorer Giaccherini.

  8. 80

John O'Shea could well be a lucky boy there. He's all over Dani Osvaldo but no penalty.

  9. 74

But the free-kick is raked over by the England striker

  10. 73

Wanyama plays Ramirez in with a beautiful pass but the striker is bundled over 25 yards out. Lambert stands over the ball...

  11. 69

Another corner for Southampton results in Westwood claiming the ball, and the hosts are starting to get a little desperate.

  12. Off comes Adam Lallana, replaced by Gaston Ramirez.

  13. 67

Sunderland are restricting Southampton to strikes from outside the area here, and Saints seem to be struggling.

  14. 66

Rodriguez cushions the ball well and sets his sights on goal, but his effort from outside the box is well over again.

  15. 60

Lambert lets fly at Westwood's goal from 25 yards but it's a great save again.

  16. 58

Sunderland break straight away and Giaccherini's ball finds Altidore whose low shot is blocked by Boruc.

  17. 57

Jay Rodriguez should perhaps score there as Osvaldo's clipped ball finds him easily in the six-yard box, but Westwood catches easily.

  18. 54

Adam Johnson cuts inside and hits an effort just over from 25 yards.

  19. On comes David Vaughan for Jack Colback.

  20. 50

A fiery effort from Lallana flashes just past the post.

  21. 46

Lallana almost finds a way through to goal but for an excellent challenge. Intricate play from Southampton.

  22. Dani Osvaldo and Nathaniel Clyne are shaping up to come on for Southampton, no news of changes for Sunderland just yet.

  23. What are your predictions for the second-half then? And who impressed you in the first? Remember to let me know by e-mail at, or on Twitter at MattStead91

  24. There goes the whistle and it's Sunderland who go into the break 1 goal up. Southampton have perhaps had the better of the half in terms of possession and chances however and Lambert has been impressive. The visitors took advantage of some lax defending however and have set up perfectly for this away day.

  25. 44

Huge appeals again as Southampton continue to battle for that equaliser. Lambert's knock-down to Lallana gives the midfielder a chance to burst into the area. He's seemingly dragged down by John O'Shea, but the referee waves play on.

  26. 39

Lambert has been Southampton's only real danger in front of goal today, and Ward-Prowse stands up another cross for the striker to head just over.

  27. 36

A Southampton delivery creates huge confusion in the Sunderland area and there are cries for a penalty, but no luck for the hosts.

  28. 35

Celutska and Sessegnon combine well to create space for Altidore, but the striker is crowded out and the ball falls loose.

  29. Gardner crashes straight into Luke Shaw and receives a yellow card.

  30. 30

Great ball from Johnson to the energetic Colback, but well dealt with by Southampton.

  31. 29

Southampton have had the most of the ball but are struggling to create much against a well-organised Sunderland side.

  32. James Ward-Prowse has a handfueld of Jack Colback's shirt and is snapping at the ankles, and rightfully receives the game's first booking.

  33. 26

Sloppy defending from Shaw as Sessegnon manages to wriggle in a ball to Giaccherini, but the effort is well over.

  34. 23

The ball is bobbling around the Sunderland area as Ward-Prowse tries to steamroller through. Rodriguez eventually gets a toe on it but it's deflected and out for a corner.

  35. 20

Larsson's corner very nearly finds it's way straight in and Boruc has to punch clear. No men on the posts for Saints.

  36. 19

Corner again to Sunderland who are trying to grab any opportunity they can to get forward.

  37. 18

First real chance for Southampton as Ward-Prowse plays a great ball into the Sunderland box for Rickie Lambert to get a head onto. The striker does brilliantly and nearly finds the equaliser, but Westwood gets down well to save.

  38. 17

Rickie Lambert is having to drop pretty deep to get a touch of the ball for Southampton here, although he's accustomed to the role. Some raking balls from the England international have stretched the Sunderland defence.

  39. 13

Sunderland have set up excellently to cope with this challenge away at a confident Southampton, plenty of pressing on the ball when it's in their half but content with allowing the hosts to play it around their back four. Intriguing tactical battle.

  40. 11

Di Canio's team on top again now. Johnson works tirelessly down the right to win a throw-in, but Southampton's defence, marking lapse for the goal aside, have been impressive.

  41. 8

The early goals gave the game a frantic feel but both sides are now seeming a little more settled on the ball. Southampton are passing it around waiting to exploit possible spaces.

  42. 5

Southampton find space for a short breather and all of a sudden find themselves with a goalscoring opportunity. Lambert drops deep to pick up the ball and plays in Rodriguez excellently. The striker's finish is cool and nestles into the back of the net, but the flag is correctly up for offside.

  43. 4

Sunderland aren't sitting back after their opener and Jack Colback is at the fore of their attack, but Southampton defend well there.

  44. 2

And from the corner, Larsson finds an unmarked Giaccherini in the area, and it's an easy header for the Italian.

  45. 2

Sebastian Larsson's set-piece expertise is second-to-none, but Southampton's defence is well-drilled. A deep free-kick is headed out for a corner.

  46. 1

An early Lallana pass goes searching down the right-hand side but to no avail for the hosts.

  47. Southampton are odds-on favourites to win today with Sunderland 9/2 outsiders. Rickie Lambert heads the goalscorer betting and is available at a Price Boosted 5/1 to scorer first while substitute Pablo Osvaldo is 5/1 to score last on his debut.

  48. Five minutes to kick off now then, and the teams are walking out onto the pitch at St Mary's. Huge game for both sides today.

  49. Mauricio Pochettino is confident enough with last week's display to stick with the same starting XI then, but hands new record signing Dani Osvaldo a place on the bench. For Sunderland, Craig Gardner and Modibo Diakite make their first starts this season as Valentin Roberge and Cabral drop to the bench.

  50. Sunderland: Westwood; Celustka, O'Shea, Diakite, Colback; Johnson, Larsson, Gardner, Giaccherini; Sessegnon; Altidore. Subs: Mannone, Cabral, Wickham, Vaughan, Ji, Moberg Karlsson, Roberge.

  51. Southampton: Boruc; Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw; Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse, Lallana; Rodriguez, Lambert. Subs: K. Davis, Clyne, S. Davis, Ramirez, Cork, Osvaldo, Hooiveld

  52. What are your thoughts and predictions on the game then? Will Southampton carry their form from last week into this, or can Sunderland claim their first points of the season? Who do you think will be the game's key players? Let me know by e-mail at, or on Twitter at MattStead91

  53. Sunderland however will want to bounce back from disappointment last week as, despite their best efforts, Paolo Di Canio's new-look side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Fulham. Team news for both sides is coming up shortly.

  54. Southampton's first home game of the season will come off the back of a last-gasp victory over West Brom last weekend, with England's hero Rickie Lambert securing all three points with a late penalty.
