  1. A final mention should go to the crowd, who created a fantastic atmosphere inside the MCG. It was a typical pre-season friendly on the pitch, but far from it off it. Well done to all!

  2. That's it. Steven Gerrard scored in the first half before Iago Aspas put the seal on the victory for Liverpool with the last kick of the game. Youngsters Jordan Ibe, Raheem Sterling and Andre Wisdom put in impressive performances, while Luis Suarez produced some moments of quality as a second-half substitute. Melbourne Victory, meanwhile, can be proud to have stayed in the game for so long, especially in the absence of so many first-team players.

  3. 92

GOAL! I spoke too soon! Luis Suarez produces some trademark skill inside the penalty area to set up Iago Aspas for a tap-in.

  4. 89

It looks certain that this game will finish 1-0, with Liverpool keeping the ball well as the clock ticks on.

  5. 85

Iago Aspas gets a brief sight of goal but he hesitates and is unable to get his shot away, with Adrian Leijer the man providing the block. The resulting corner sees Daniel Agger force Nathan Coe into action with a firm header.

  6. 83

Francesco Stella replaces Liverpool fan Andrew Nabbout, who has done well tonight, for Melbourne Victory.

  7. 82

Suarez sets up a shooting chance for Downing with a clever backheel, but the midfielder's shot is well blocked.

  8. 80

The attendance here tonight has just been announced as 95,446. The vast, vast majority of those fans are supporting Liverpool. It's been a tremendous atmosphere - but the game is now petering out.

  9. 77

He's been on less than five minutes but Suarez is already showing the ability that made Liverpool turn down a £40million bid from Arsenal for the forward. He's already completed one nutmeg in the Victory box - pure class.

  10. 74

Suarez is quickly involved, thinking about a shot before passing to fellow substitute Stewart Downing, who wins but then wastes a corner.

  11. 72

Luis Suarez is finally on to play the last 18 minutes. Simon Mignolet, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas are among the other newcomers to the game as Brendan Rodgers makes a raft of changes.

  12. 67

Borini has another effort, but this one is easily saved by Nathan Coe after a deflection.

  13. 64

Raheem Sterling sets himself up for a shot on the edge of the box but, not for the first time, is well off target with his effort.

  14. 63

Steven Gerrard is replaced by Lucas Leiva. Gerrard has been dominant throughout and, of course, scored Liverpool's goal.

  15. 62

Borini suddenly looks like a new player! He goes close again with a bicycle kick inside the box. That would have been special!

  16. 60

That's more like it from Borini. The forward uses his strength to hold off his marker then fire in a well-struck volley which forces Nathan Coe into action. The ball then goes straight down the other end, with Brad Jones making a rather unconventional save from Connor Pain.

  17. 59

Two of Liverpool's quieter players here almost combine, but Jordan Henderson's cross does not reach Fabio Borini as Nathan Coe steps out to catch.

  18. 55

A few Liverpool players are starting to look tired, with short passes becoming a recurring theme. Expect some subs shortly.

  19. 53

Jordan Henderson gets his second effort of the game on target - and it's another pea roller, which hardly troubles Nathan Coe. A pass may have been a better option.

  20. 49

A succession of Liverpool corners came to nothing, but Luis Suarez is warming up again. It looks as though we'll get to see the Arsenal target pretty soon.

  21. 47

Martin Skrtel forces Nathan Coe into action early on in the second half with a flicked header from a Steven Gerrard corner.

  22. The players are out for the second half. Brendan Rodgers has made no changes to his Liverpool team - yet.

  23. 45

Andre Wisdom enjoyed some promising moments in central defence during that first half, while Steven Gerrard was dominant as a deep midfielder. Raheem Sterling and Jordan Ibe were a constant threat down the wings, but Fabio Borini and Jordan Henderson had little involvement. Who impressed you and who didn't? 24. 45

That's half-time. It's rarely been spectacular, but Liverpool are controlling the game and fully deserve their 1-0 lead, given to them by Steven Gerrard.

  25. 44

Raheem Sterling creates a chance for Jordan Ibe with a clever through-ball into the box, but the youngster is flagged offside.

  26. 43

There's a lull in the game as half-time approaches, but Luis Suarez is warming up down the touchline to keep the massed Liverpool fans excited. Will we get to see him in the second half?

  27. 38

Andre Wisdom is another youngster doing himself no harm here. He wins a challenge at the back and shows good strength to carry the ball forward and get Liverpool on the attack. It ends with Jordan Henderson testing Nathan Coe from distance.

  28. 36

Jordan Ibe is really impressing here. Yet again he beats a man down Liverpool's right flank, with his cross being palmed away by Nathan Coe. It falls to Steven Gerrard, who can't take advantage.

  29. 35

Fabio Borini finally gets in on the action but it's not the finest of moments for the striker as he sends in a shot that is high and not very handsome.

  30. 32

GOAL! Steven Gerrard makes - and scores - the opening goal in the MCG. It's his dummy to allow Joe Allen onto the ball that really gets the move started, and it was the Reds skipper running into the box to meet Allen's pass and coolly slot home. Classic Gerrard!

  31. 29

Fabio Borini is cutting a lonesome figure out there. With Liverpool's wide players sitting deep when Melbourne have the ball, and Jordan Henderson having little impact as an advanced midfielder, the Reds' central striker has barely had a touch.

  32. 27

Joe Allen beats a defender in the box but can only scuff a shot into the arms of Nathan Coe.

  33. 26

Andrew Nabbout produces some fine skill down the right to wrong-foot Jose Enrique and send over a cross, but Victory are unable to make anything of it.

  34. 23

A long, patient build-up sees Jose Enrique release Raheem Sterling on the left of the hosts' box, but the winger can't pick out a team-mate with a cross. There was good work in the build-up by Joe Allen, who showed a quick turn of pace and direction to get Liverpool on the front foot.

  35. 21

The game is opening up now, Steven Gerrard forcing Victory keeper Nathan Coe into action with a slightly deflected long-range effort.

  36. 20

Liverpool are on top, but the first shot on target of the game comes from the hosts, Andrew Nabbout forcing Brad Jones into a fairly routine save.

  37. 19

Two of Liverpool's young players impress to nearly set up a chance. First Andre Wisdom steps out of defence to intercept a ball and get the Reds moving and then Jordan Ibe gets into the Victory box but can't find a team-mate.

  38. 18

As I said, Raheem Sterling is looking Liverpool's liveliest player at the moment. He has the Reds' second attempt on goal from 25 yards, but it flies well wide.

  39. 15

A noticeable early feature of the game is how deep Liverpool are sitting when Melbourne have the ball. Sterling and Ibe are providing cover for the full-backs, and there isn't a great deal of pressure being applied to whichever home player has the ball. Liverpool's players are clearly a long way from full fitness this early on in pre-season.

  40. 13

As you might expect, Steven Gerrard is dictating the play in midfield. Operating as Liverpool's deepest midfielder, he's already attempted a couple of long-range passes to the flanks, one of which has just evaded the onrushing Glen Johnson.

  41. 10

Action switches down the other end with Connor Pain beating Joe Allen inside the Liverpool box before cutting back - for nobody. Promising from Victory, though.

  42. 8

Sterling is Liverpool's biggest threat in these early stages. First he nearly plays a ball through to Joe Allen in the hosts' box, and then he has a run at Jason Geria down the left flank. It eventually leads to a corner, which Liverpool waste.

  43. 6

A minute later, Raheem Sterling has the first chance of the match. Steven Gerrard plays a glorious ball over the Victory defence, and Sterling hits it first time on the half volley just past the angle of post and crossbar.

  44. 5

Melbourne have been trying to pass the ball early on but we've just seen the first flashes of Jordan Ibe's talents as he attempted to break into the hosts' box down the right.

  45. 2

We're underway at the MCG. As expected, Liverpool look to be lining up in a 4-3-3 formation with Jordan Ibe and Raheem Sterling either side of Fabio Borini in attack.

  46. You'll Never Walk Alone is now being played and vociferously sung along to by Liverpool's huge following in the stadium. This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of the Australian fans.

  47. The teams have entered the playing arena now in front of the largest crowd ever to watch a football match at the MCG. Impressive!

  48. Brendan Rodgers on Luis Suarez, who is on Liverpool's bench today: 'Luis will play some part. He is a bit tired, so he won't have too much game time. But I'm sure he'll play at some point.'

  49. Fabio Borini, who starts as Liverpool's central striker, is 5/1 to open the scoring. Jordan Ibe and Raheem Sterling, who start in the wide positions, are 6/1 and 7/1 respectively. Bet here: http://www.skybet.com/football/club-friendlies/event/15467792

  50. Liverpool fans, you must be delighted to see Luis Suarez on the bench today following the news of Arsenal's bid for the striker. And what are your hopes for Jordan Ibe, who starts today? E-mail me your thoughts ahead of the game to mark.holmes@bskyb.com or get in touch on Twitter @Homzy.

  51. Full Liverpool team: Jones, Johnson, Skrtel, Wisdom, Enrique, Gerrard, Allen, Henderson, Ibe, Sterling, Borini. Subs: Mignolet, Kelly, Coates, Agger, Flanagan, Spearing, Lucas, Downing, Alberto, Aspas, Suarez, Robinson, Assaidi.

  52. Brendan Rodgers has made a host of changes to the side that beat an Indonesia XI 2-0 on Saturday, with only Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique keeping their place in the starting line-up. Luis Suarez, meanwhile, is on the bench.

  53. Hello and welcome to today's live commentary for the second game of Liverpool's pre-season tour against Melbourne Victory at the MCG.
