  1. The full-time whistle goes and Manchester City have safely booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals after an impressive 5-0 victory over Barnsley, with Carlos Tevez netting a hat-trick.

  2. 90

City win a couple of late corners but cannot add to their winning margin as Lescott heads over at the back post from Milner's cross.

  3. 88

Barnsley may be about to exit the FA Cup but they can still reflect with pride on their run to the quarter-finals and must now concentrate on a Championship relegation battle, after today's results left them bottom of the table.

  4. 86

Milner almost makes it six for Man City with a ferocious strike that leaves the woodwork rattling before bouncing away to safety.

  5. 85

City may have been magnificent today but it has been a frustrating afternoon for Dzeko, who continues to shoot from just about anywhere but is not getting any closer as he slams his latest effort high and wide from distance.

  6. 83

Harewood tries to latch on to a pass at the far post but is unable to turn it back on goal and threaten Pantilimon.

  7. 81

It is a bit like a training session at the moment for City as they play keep-ball and just run the clock down.

  8. 79

Mellis has looked lively for Barnsley since coming on and again shows a few good touches as Barnsley try to pick a way through City's defence.

  9. 77

Dzeko lets fly with an angled drive from distance which flies just wide of Steele's left-hand post.

  10. 76

Tevez gets a tremendous ovation as he is replaced by Milner for the closing stages. The Argentine striker has been in superb form today to lead City to a convincing rout, but he does not get the warmest reception from Mancini as he leaves the field.

  11. 74

Barnsley are being allowed a little more time and space here and they are relishing the opportunity to string a few passes together, although at the moment there is no sign of a goal for the away side.

  12. 72

The ball falls for Harewood just outside the area and he has no hesitation in shooting, but his effort flies harmlessly wide.

  13. 70

Man City can afford to just go through the motions and keep possession from here on in, only springing forward sporadically to try and add further goals.

  14. 68

Razak tries his luck with a shot from 20 yards which is sliced so badly wide it only just goes out for a goal-kick rather than a throw-in.

  15. 66

That goal will be Silva's last act for the day as the Spaniard makes way for Razak.

  16. 65

GOAL! Silva gets in on the act as Man City make it 5-0. Again Tevez is involved as he plays in a cross from the right which Silva converts at the second attempt, after his initial shot is saved by Steele.

  17. 63

Man City increase the tempo again and Barnsley just can't live with them when they are in full flow, as Dzeko drills a powerful effort wide.

  18. 61

Tunniciliffe shows great pace to sprint through the centre and get a shot away, but Pantilimon spreads a leg out to make a good save and then makes a more comfortable stop from Mellis' follow-up strike.

  19. 59

Dzeko is released through the middle and takes the ball down beautifully, but he does not quite get enough elevation on his attempted chip over the onrushing Steele and the keeper reaches up to make the save.

  20. 58

City could be forgiven for taking their foot off the gas here but they will be determined not to let Barnsley get back into the tie.

  21. 56

Mellis takes aim with a decent volley from outside the area after a neat move for Barnsley, but Pantilimon gets his enormous frame down quickly to his left to make a good save.

  22. 54

O'Brien nearly makes an immediate impact for Barnsley but fires a shot off target.

  23. 53

Mancini also makes a change and it Nasri, who appears to be carrying a slight injury, who goes off to be replaced by Sinclair.

  24. 52

Flitcroft responds to City's fourth goal with a triple substitution, bringing on O'Brien, Scotland and Mellis for Cywka, Dagnall and Etuhu.

  25. 50

GOAL! And Tevez has his hat-trick as he finishes off a Nasri cross from the left with a neat finish into the bottom corner from inside the area.

  26. 49

Tunnicliffe is shown a yellow card after lunging in on Kolarov. He appeared to win the ball but was a bit too aggressive, according to referee Anthony Taylor.

  27. 48

Lescott's careless pass from defence is cut out by Dagnall but the Barnsley man cannot control the ball and City survive.

  28. 47

Barnsley have a mountain to climb if they are to pull off a remarkable comeback at the Etihad Stadium, and it could instead be an exercise in damage limitation. City will be looking to keep the intensity high and complete an emphatic victory.

  29. 46

Barnsley get the second half started. There have been no changes at the interval.

  30. The half-time whistle goes and Man City are in total control at 3-0 against Barnsley after a devastating attacking display in the opening 45 minutes, with Tevez netting twice and Kolarov also on the score sheet.

  31. 45

Cywka tries his luck from the edge of the area but slices badly wide and Pantilimon remains untroubled in the City goal.

  32. 44

Silva's header from the corner crashes into the arm of Etuhu and there are appeals for a penalty, but that was very much ball to hand and the referee correctly waves play on.

  33. 43

Barnsley are creaking under the pressure and mistakenly try and pass their way out of trouble at the back, which results in a corner for City.

  34. 41

Nasri delivers a menacing low cross from the left and it looks as if it could come through for Tevez to complete his hat-trick, but a crucial touch just diverts the ball away to safety.

  35. Can Tevez complete his hat-trick? He's 3/1 to do so by netting next, while the Tykes are now 500/1 for a comeback win.

  36. 39

Barnsley enjoy a nice period of build-up play before Dagnall glances a header wide from six yards out.

  37. 37

Dzeko now tries his luck from a City corner but is denied by Steele as Barnsley continue to come under pressure at the back.

  38. 35

Steele is forced into action again with a smart stop from Tevez's shot after a City move which must have contained at least 15 passes.

  39. 33

City are in cruise control now and there must be a lot of head-scratching going on in the Barnsley dugout about how to deal with such rampant opponents.

  40. 31

GOAL! City are really turning on the style here and it is Tevez who strikes again to make it 3-0 as he slots a shot calmly past Steele from eight yards, following another fluid attack with excellent movement from the whole team and a couple of exquisite passes, notably the final ball from Silva.

  41. 29

Barnsley cannot afford to let their heads drop here but City have certainly been in supreme form so far to carve out a commanding lead with just half an hour gone.

  42. 27

GOAL! A flowing move for City results in a fine second goal as Tevez speeds down the right wing before cutting the ball back expertly for Kolarov to sweep home a powerful low finish from just inside the area into the bottom corner.

  43. 25

Cywka shows good skill and strength to keep the ball in play by the touchline but then tries an ambitious cross-field pass to Dagnall which is just too heavy.

  44. 23

Nasri is unable to latch on to a clever through ball as he loses out to Wiseman in a foot race. If he had got to the ball first there it could have very easily been 2-0.

  45. 21

Yaya Toure becomes the first player to be shown a yellow card following a foul in midfield on Dagnall, after a fast break from Perkins.

  46. 19

City are really enjoying themselves and even the fans are prepared to laugh at their own players as Silva attempts an overhead kick and only succeeds in booting the ball into his own face.

  47. 18

Kolarov delivers a deep cross from the left wing to pick out Tevez at the far post, but the Argentine cannot double his tally for the day as he loops a header over the bar.

  48. 16

Barnsley are showing plenty of spirit in midfield as they try to close down City quickly and regain possession, but they have mostly been left chasing shadows so far.

  49. 15

No team has managed to score a goal past Man City yet in this season's competition and it will be a tall order for Barnsley to break that duck today as they have not had much of the ball in the early stages.

  50. 13

That early goal has calmed any nerves that may have been present inside the Etihad Stadium and City are dictating play as they go in search of a second.

  51. 11

GOAL! Tevez puts City in front from close range and it will be a long way back for Barnsley now. Yaya Toure had cleverly flicked the ball into Silva's path and his shot was pushed on to the post by Steele before rebounding kindly for Tevez to supply the finish.

  52. 9

Barnsley enjoy a decent period of possession in midfield before Man City break quickly and Dzeko heads over from Nasri's left-wing cross. The Bosnian just had to stretch a little for that one and could not keep his effort down.

  53. 7

A promising Man City attack breaks down as Yaya Toure and Nasri get their wires crossed and the Ivorian's ball forward is easily cut out.

  54. 5

Barnsley are already having to set up camp inside their own box as City again threaten down the left, but Nasri's dangerous low cross is intercepted and goes behind for a corner.

  55. 4

Man City are beginning to settle into a nice rhythm now and Steele has to punch clear a cross following a spell of possession.

  56. Barnsley are a hefty 18/1 to dump Manchester City out of the FA Cup today and 8/1 to salvage a replay. Carlos Tevez is the favourite to open the scoring followed by Edin Dzeko at 7/2, while the Tykes' strike duo Chris Dagnall and Marlon Harewood are both 16/1 to break the deadlock.

  57. 2

Barnsley make a bright start and win an early corner, but Tunnicliffe's volley from the edge of the area is wild and slices harmlessly wide.

  58. 1

Man City get the game started and let us hope for a thrilling cup tie as both sides go in search of a place in the semi-finals.

  59. If Barnsley are looking for positive omens about today's match, then unfortunately the recent form guide does not offer too much hope. Since beating MK Dons in the fifth round of the FA Cup, the Tykes have picked up just one win in four Championship games and have shipped nine goals in their last three to drop into the relegation zone. City have won both their Premier League matches since demolishing Leeds in the FA Cup and their defence has been particularly impressive, so Barnsley face a daunting task as they strive to reach the semi-finals at Wembley.

  60. Man City: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Toure, Lescott, Kolarov, Nasri, Toure, Barry, Silva, Dzeko, Tevez. Subs: Hart, Milner, Sinclair, Javi Garcia, Clichy, Nastasic, Razak.

  61. Barnsley: Steele, Wiseman, Cranie, Kennedy, Foster, Etuhu, Tunnicliffe, Perkins, Cywka, Dagnall, Harewood. Subs: Lidakevicius, Hassell, Delap, O'Brien, Scotland, Mellis, Rose.

  63. Barnsley have beaten two of their Championship rivals to reach this stage, disposing of Burnley and Hull City in rounds three and four before knocking out Milton Keynes Dons of League One last time out. Manchester City, meanwhile, have defeated Watford, Stoke City and Leeds United and will be targeting FA Cup glory as their chances of defending the Premier League title are remote.

  64. Good afternoon and welcome to our minute-by-minute commentary of Manchester City's FA Cup quarter-final at home to Barnsley. It has been a year of shocks in the domestic cup competitions and Barnsley will be hoping to spring another massive surprise against the 2011 champions at the Etihad Stadium to take their place in the last four.
