Brest celebrate their early goal

Lyon were unable to pick up the win they needed to move level with Paris St Germain at the top of Ligue 1 after drawing at Brest.

Kamel Chafni gave the strugglers an eighth-minute lead, only for Tripy Makonda's own goal eight minutes into the second half to earn Remi Garde's visitors a point.

The draw means Lyon trail PSG by two points, following the leaders' unexpected loss at Reims, while Brest move five points clear of the bottom three.

Brest, who went into the game without a home success since November 17, started brightly and after winger Magaye Gueye had shot inches wide in the fourth minute, they took the lead.

On-loan Everton man Gueye combined with Chafni, before the latter's powerful right-foot shot beat Remy Vercoutre in the Lyon goal.

The hosts continued to press and six minutes later Mario Licka released Jonathan Ayite, whose low shot skimmed a post with Vercoutre beaten.

Lyon tested Alexis Thebaux in the 26th minute, with the Brest goalkeeper making an excellent save to his right to deny Bafetimbi Gomis.

And 11 minutes later Thebaux fisted away a right-foot volley from Lisandro Lopez, who had been found by Dejan Lovren's header.

The visitors maintained the pressure at the start of the second half - but levelled in fortunate circumstances.

Clement Grenier freed Steed Malbranque, who crossed towards Lisandro inside the penalty area. Thebaux got in the way of the Lyon man's shot - but the loose ball made contact with Makonda and rolled into the net off the defender's thigh.

Lisandro volleyed Samuel Umtiti's cross wide midway through the half as the visitors pressed for a winner - but 10 minutes later Vercoutre needed to be at his best to deny Licka, who had been freed by Ahmed Kantari.

However, Lyon had the best chance of the closing stages with six minutes remaining.

Alexandre Lacazette crossed for Malbranque, who shot goalwards. Thebaux was beaten but defender Florian Lejeune cleared off the line to preserve a point for the hosts.
