1. Newcastle stumble over the line, as results elsewhere ensure they progress to the last 32 of the Europa League. Credit to Maritimo though, who put up a valiant fight in the second half and came within an inch of winning it right at the death. Thanks for your company tonight and I'll see you all soon.

   Brigido is set away down the left, and he drops a wonderful ball into the unmarked Fidelis whose volley is inches away from finding the net! So close for the striker, and that should really be game over now.

   Abeid lazily lets Joao in, and it's all Maritimo right now as they close on what would be a crucial winning goal in Group D.

   Danilo goes for glory with a wild drive, and Krul comfortably sees it wide as three minutes of injury time are added on.

   Newcastle are yet to put this game to bed, as Fidelis finds Brigido on the left, making strides into the box before Taylor does well to force the attack back.

   Diogo finds space down the right, but upon being played in by Brigido, Taylor immediately makes up the ground and forces the full-back away from goal.

   Salin claims an Anita free-kick with ease, but his early throw out to Fidelis catches the striker unawares and the ball goes for a Newcastle throw-in.

   Simpson's rasping shot earns Newcastle a corner, with Marveaux's delivery headed away by Rosario as Newcastle retain the pressure in the visitors' half.

    Fidelis finds the net again - but this time the flag is raised after the striker latched on to Joao's ball.

    Ba and Ferreira collide in a stiff collision that requires treatment for both players, with the Maritimo man looking the worse for wear.

    Fidelis is given an advantage after Miranda is tripped, but he inexplicably ignores the option of Sami, going for goal with a dreadful shot that leaves his team-mate livid.

    Ameobi drills a teasing cross into the six-yard box, with Salin beating Ba with a punch, and the keeper does well again, this time catching Ameobi's second delivery much more comfortably.

    Ferreira and Simao combine until Simpson resumes his position to deny space down the left. That forces the visitors' attack back and they have to begin again from defence.

    Danilo finds himself a yard and lets rip with a stunning effort that isn't too far away from creeping into the far post. Maritimo have improved greatly since the break.

    Joao breaks up a Newcastle attack calmly, but as they look to branch out and progress themselves, Simao's driven shot is cleared by a Coloccini interception.

    Valentin ploughs forward and gives away the ball cheaply. The visitors win it back though as Simao finds Sami who heads wide from a brilliant position. Their best chance of the match by far.

    Ferreira chooses the wrong option in a Maritimo counter attack, playing straight into Taylor when the ball over the top to the back post to Sami was surely the right call.

    Santon ventures forward, whipping a powerful ball into the near post, which Ba stretches for, but is beaten by a sterdy punch away by Salin.

    Sami takes on SImpson, but the right-back's pace proves valuable as he holds off the forward and makes the tackle which concedes a throw-in.

    A Marveaux corner is hacked clear, but the winger is found again by Taylor before cutting inside Diogo and taking a trip under Valentin. No penalty is given though.

    No yellow card for Joao, perhaps fortunately for the midfielder after a tug on Bigirimana in an advantageous position for the hosts.

    Simpson is marshalled away at the byline by some solid marking from Ferreira, and the visitors look to break with Danilo's swerving strike drawing a fine save from Krul.

    The visitors are quite poor in the final third right now, as Ferreira plays a pacey ball down the left which leaves none of his team-mates with any chance ot reaching it. It's a Newcastle goal-kick and it really is quite straight-forward for the hosts at the moment.

    Newcastle calmly play their way forward, but a rash pass from Anita leaves Cisse stranded. Moments later, Ben Arfa looks to force his way forward again before Rosario steps in.

    Ameobi is tripped by Joao, with the hosts looking quite threatening in virtually every attack they make now. Anita's delivery is cleared by Miranda though as Newcastle pick up possession again.

    A Simao free-kick is straight down the throat of Krul, who was remained relatively untested within the first half an hour.

    Ameobi takes on Miranda, but he should do better when reaching the byline as the centre-back cuts out his ball and passes on far too easily.

    Sami sets off to meet Simao's ball, but Taylor's positioning is correct and he is on hand to cut out the ball and calmly play back to Krul.

    Joao loses control, and when trying to retrieve possession back from Anita, the Maritmo man concedes a free-kick.

    Marveaux runs the ball out of play trying to drive Newcastle away after Coloccini's clearance. It doesn't take them long to regain the ball though, and Simpson skips to the byline before his cross into the six-yard box is met by Salin.

    Maritimo retain possession as they press for an equaliser, as Anita is drawn into a foul on Dias, conceding a free-kick which Simao will launch into the box.

    It's a lovely goal from Newcastle, with Ben Arfa playing in Marveaux who slots the ball past Salin's legs to net his first Newcastle goal.

    Diogo, who looks a neat oulet for the visitors going forward, looks for Adilson over the top, but Anita closes down the full-back as Newcastle resume control of the ball.

    Diogo looks to poke the ball past Santon, but the left-back recovers and makes a timely tackle to prevent the Maritimo man breaking down the right.

    Simpson is penalised for a tackle on Dias, and Adilson is played in from the free-kick, taking on Taylor, before a poor cross into the near post is smothered by Krul.

    Miranda plays in Ferreira, and the left-back does well to venture down the left side before his delivery is met by the head of Taylor, as the visitors start to become much more lively going forward.

    Diogo plays a one-two with Adilson, but after some neat passing, that man Coloccini is there again to snuff out the danger.

    Anita's delivery is quite poor really as it bounces wide of goal with not a single one of his team-mates in sight.

    Bigirimana is pulled back by Joao as Newcastle prepare to launcha free-kick into the box from 40 yards out.

    Coloccini shows his class by calmly playing clear of Miranda, but the visitors pick it up again, before Simao plays a loose ball forward.

    Ferreira aims a speculative shot on goal from range, but it's actually quite an impressive effort from 35 yards and Krul has to react well to judge the bounce of the ball.

    Cisse is caught offside for the third time in as many minutes, and it's a tight decision on this occasion as the striker aimed to meet Ben Arfa's through ball.

    Newcastle clear the danger from the corner, as a succession of Diogo throw-ins eventually end up with Simpson breaking on the right, as the offside flag is raised against Cisse.

    The Magpies have started menacingly so far, with Bigirimana unlucky to trip while trying to feed in Cisse. As Sami then breaks forward for the visitors, his shot clips Coloccini and travels for a corner.

    Coloccini gets his head to Ben Arfa's corner but he can only direct the ball away from goal and Salin gathers comfortably.

    Superb early chance for Newcastle, as Santon cuts inside from the left before unleashing a thunderbolt which is parried wide by Salin.

86. Darren Horne writes: 'Interesting to see Pardew start Ben Arfa. With an injury plagued squad, which can't seem to win the weekend after European games, I'm surprised he hasn't rested him. Especially as only him and Ba look like scoring at the moment. And no Obertan? I'm assuming he's injured, as he's been a real threat in Europe. If Newcastle don't get an early goal I'm sure some nerves will kick in.'

The Argentina international returns from his domestic suspension as one of four changes to the side which lost 2-1 to Swansea in the Barclays Premier League at the weekend with he, Gael Bigirimana, Sylvain Marveaux and Papiss Cisse replacing Mike Williamson, the banned Cheick Tiote, Shane Ferguson and Demba Ba. Opposite number Pedro Martins makes seven changes after resting his big guns for the 3-0 Portuguese Cup victory over Aguiar da Beira, and that means starts for seven of the men who lined up in the reverse fixture, a 0-0 draw in Madeira.
