McCombe: Major blow for Rovers
Team news for Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy second-round tie between
Doncaster and Chesterfield at the Keepmoat Stadium (kick-off 7pm).
Doncaster have been dealt a huge injury blow with the news that Jamie McCombe could be out until the new year.
McCombe has been nursing an injury recently but a scan has revealed the problem is far more serious than originally thought.
In addition to a torn muscle in the front of his thigh, the former Huddersfield captain also has a hairline fracture of the spine.
Fellow centre-half and skipper Rob Jones is available again after missing the 1-0 home victory over Shrewsbury on Saturday through suspension.
Midfielder Martin Woods may return to the squad following a bout of concussion while namesake Michael, signed on non-contract terms last week, may be involved in the second-round tie.
"Michael Woods trained with us last week. He looks like a player and he's a confident lad but I've not seen him play in a game," said Rovers boss Dean Saunders. "He will either be involved in Monday's Under-21 friendly or against Chesterfield."
Mark Allott has added to Chesterfield's injury problems.
Allott limped off with a hamstring problem midway through the first half of the 1-0 win at Aldershot on Saturday and the experienced midfielder is likely to miss the second-round tie.
Defender and skipper Sam Hird (calf) and winger Danny Whitaker (groin) were absent against Aldershot after they were injured in training on Friday. The duo are also unlikely to feature in south Yorkshire.
Goalkeeper Tommy Lee (shoulder), defender Nathan Smith (ankle) and striker Marc Richards (ankle) remain on the recovery trail.
Teenager Micah Evans made his debut for the Spireites at Aldershot and the on-loan Blackburn forward could keep his place in the starting line-up.
Ahead of the game on Tuesday night, caretaker manager Tommy Wright said: "After that great day at Wembley last season I'd be mad not to take the competition seriously. But obviously we're a bit thin on the ground with bodies, which obviously I wish we weren't but we'll just get on with it because I think he's [Doncaster boss Dean Saunders] a bit thin on the ground with injuries as well."
