Rapid Vienna were left to rue a missed penalty as they suffered a home defeat to Rosenborg in their Europa League Group K opener. The Austrian side were forced to play in front of an empty Ernst Hapoel Stadium by UEFA as a result of the crowd trouble which marred their play-off win over PAOK. And it was perhaps just as well after Deni Alar saw his penalty saved after being brought down in the area by Cristian Gamboa. Rosenborg had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to an 18th minute goal from Tarik Elyounoussi and Mikael Dorsin's header on the hour. However, Rapid hit back through Markus Katzer on 65 minutes and should have equalised from the spot just four minutes later. The visitors got off to a poor start when Daniel Fredheim Holm was booked after just seven minutes for a foul on Guido Burgstaller, but Alar's resulting free-kick was comfortably dealt with by Daniel Orlund. The Norwegian side took the lead 10 minutes later in fine style, with Elyounoussi drilling a left-footed shot high into the net from 20 yards after an assist from Rade Prica. And that was the one true note of quality in an otherwise disappointing half, which saw plenty of long-range shots but few clear-cut chances. The game looked effectively over on the hour mark when Rosenborg doubled their lead. Dorsin's initial shot was tipped round the post by Lukas Konigshofer but Borek Dockal's inswinging corner found Dorsin in space just six yards out to head home. Rapid needed to respond swiftly and they did just that, reducing their deficit five minutes later. Stefan Hoffmann's 25-yard shot was tipped round the post and from the second of two corners in quick succession, Katzer headed beyond Orlund to make it 2-1. Just four minutes later it looked as though the home side would get back on level terms when Gamboa fouled Alar in the area, but the striker went for placement rather than power from the spot and saw Orlund make the save. Rapid continued to look for an equaliser but Christoper Trimmel missed a good chance in the last minute and Rosenborg held on for the win.
