Man City v Dortmund preview

Blues go in search of first win against German champions

Manchester City will be looking to kick-start their UEFA Champions League campaign on Wednesday when they play host to Borussia Dortmund.

Roberto Mancini's side suffered late heartache on Matchday One as they slipped to a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

City will need no reminding that they crashed out at the group stage in last season's Champions League and that they have little margin for error this time around.

A group consisting of four sides that are the current holders of their respective domestic titles will provide the sternest of tests - and City have to make the most of their fixtures on home soil.

Dortmund will be no pushovers, having claimed back-to-back Bundesliga crowns, but they will be aware that City are a formidable proposition at the Etihad Stadium.

The Blues have gone 15 games unbeaten in Europe in front of their own supporters, with FC Midtjylland the last side to leave Manchester with the spoils back in 2008/09.

City can also take heart from the fact that Dortmund have come unstuck on their last three visits to England - including a trip to Arsenal last season.

In fact, the German outfit lost all three of their games on the road last term as they too crashed out of the competition at the group stage.

They have made a positive start to the current campaign, seeing off Ajax 1-0 in their opening fixture, but are likely to favour a cautious approach against City.

Team news

City have midfielder Jack Rodwell available again for Wednesday's important Group D clash.

Rodwell is fit for selection after missing two games with a groin problem.

Full-backs Maicon (heel) and Micah Richards (ankle) are not yet ready to return to action, while centre-back Kolo Toure has not been registered for this competition.

Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp finds himself in the enviable position of being able to select from a virtually fully-fit squad.

Defender Patrick Owomoyela is the only notable absentee as he nurses a calf complaint.

Robert Lewandowski will be hoping to earn an immediate recall to the side after being dropped at the weekend, but a crushing 5-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach suggests few tweaks are required by Klopp.
