Penalty pain for Brewers

Coventry's first appearance in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy ended in a penalty shoot-out win after a 0-0 draw with Burton Albion.

City goalkeeper Joe Murphy was the hero as he scored the decisive penalty after saving spot-kicks from Marcus Holness and his opposite number Dean Lyness. Both sides converted their first nine penalties before Holness and Richard Wood, for City, missed. The best chance of a dull first half fell to the hosts when a neat exchange of passes saw Gary McSheffrey cross for Carl Baker but his header was stopped by a fine reflex save from Ross Atkins. Burton striker Billy Kee went even closer eight minutes after break when he turned a low Cleveland Taylor cross onto a post. Atkins was replaced by Lyness at the break and he produced a good save after 72 minutes to push Stephen Elliott's powerful strike over the bar when one-on-one. McSheffrey could have won it late on but fired over from six yards and the game went to penalties.
