Augsburg moved off the bottom of the Bundesliga table on Saturday afternoon after a goalless draw against Freiburg.

The promoted side took the lead in the ninth minute through Tobias Werner, only for Jonathan Schmid to equalise in the 28th minute for ninth-placed Freiburg.

However, despite extending their winless streak to eight matches, the draw was enough to lift Augsburg up a position to 17th on eight points following Greuther Furth's 1-0 loss at home to Stuttgart.

Markus Weinzierl's side headed into the game having collected only one league win so far this term, although they were just five minutes away from victory over Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend and were unfortunate not to come away with something from their midweek trip to Stuttgart.

They took an early lead when Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker produced a long ball from midfield for Werner, who raced onto the pass and poked it past advancing Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Freiburg appeared to have equalised in the 16th minute but Sebastian Freis was ruled offside before Jan Rosenthal pounced on a loose ball.

The visitors did get back on level terms just before the half-hour, though, when Augsburg keeper Mohamed Amsif managed to stop Rosenthal's shot but could only direct it into the path of Schmid, who easily struck home the rebound.

Augsburg nearly went ahead for a second time in the 64th minute after Aristide Bance's pass fell for Werner, but he headed inches wide.

The hosts had the better of the play over the closing stages but lacked a cutting edge.
