Bayer Leverkusen scored three first-half goals as they brushed basement boys Augsburg aside 3-1.

Bayer Leverkusen scored three first-half goals as they brushed basement boys Augsburg aside in the Bundesliga on Wednesday night. Stefan Kiessling headed the visitors in front in the seventh minute, Philipp Wollscheid made it two in the 39th minute and Andre Schurrle added a third just before half-time. Timothy Chandler grabbed a consolation early in the second half for the beleaguered hosts, who slumped to third fourth league defeat of the season. Leverkusen took the lead when Gonzalo Castro's shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down on the line. The ball came out to Kiessling, whose header was clawed away by goalkeeper Mohamed Amsif, but the referee deemed that the ball had crossed the line this time, despite Augsburg's protests. Former Nurnberg midfielder Wollscheid made it two six minutes before the break when his volley deflected past a wrong-footed Amsif into the far corner. Schurrle, who was defended by his coach Sami Hyypia before the game for not having scored yet this season, opened his account in the 44th minute. After dribbling in from the right, he fired a low shot into the bottom corner, beyond the reach of Amsif. Augsburg, without a win this term, responded well in the second half with Chandler scoring with an angled lob after being put through by Daniel Baier. The home side even threatened to score a second with Aristide Bance going close, but Leverkusen tightened up at the back and closed out the game without further scares.
