Martin Stranzl had pulled Gladbach level

A late goal from Alvaro Dominguez earned 10-man Borussia Monchengladbach a 2-2 draw with Hamburg, who missed a penalty at the Borussia Park Stadion.

Rafael van der Vaart gave Hamburg the lead in the 23rd minute with a spectacular goal, but he and Borussia's Martin Stranzl, who scored an equaliser in the 39th minute, had mixed feelings later in the game.

Artjoms Rudnevs gave Hamburg the lead again just before half-time and then Stranzl was shown a red card as he gave away a penalty, which Van der Vaart missed in the 55th minute.

There was late drama to follow as Dominguez headed in an equaliser with the last touch of the game, denying Hamburg a second straight win after they defeated Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.

Van der Vaart's opening goal came out of the blue as Hamburg opened the scoring.

Goalkeeper Rene Adler was the provider with a long ball forward which was collected by the Dutchman near the left-hand touchline. He cut inside and released a powerful shot into the far corner of Marc Andre ter Stegen's goal.

Gladbach responded well and they levelled in the 39th minute with Stranzl's header from a corner beating Adler.

Their joy at being level was shortlived, though, with Rudnevs restoring Hamburg's lead just before half-time with a similarly committed header from Milan Badelj's cross.

Hamburg were awarded the chance to finish the game off in the 55th minute when Stranzl was adjudged to have fouled Ivo Ilicevic inside the area. He was dismissed and a penalty was awarded.

However, Van der Vaart sent the spot kick against the outside of the left-hand post with Ter Stegen perhaps having the shot covered anyway as he dived the right way.

It was a costly miss as Gladbach again summoned up the strength to level, this time doing so deep into stoppage time.

Juan Arango whipped in a free-kick from the right and Dominguez rose to divert it home with his head to earn the home side a point.
