Dunfermline's hopes of revenge on Patrick Thistle came unstuck in spectacular fashion as they were crushed 5-1 at Firhill.
The Pars had only lost once this season, with Thistle responsible for that defeat, and they were knocked off top spot in Division One with one of their worst performances in recent seasons.
They found themselves a goal down in the fifth minute when Chris Erskine released Stephen O'Donnell and his cross was turned in at the far post by Stevie Lawless.
Partick handed Dunfermline an equaliser on 24 when Alan Muirhead headed into his own net, but they were back in front 10 minutes later when Conrad Balatoni rose to head home a corner.
Five minutes later it was 3-1 as the Pars defence gave O'Donnell time and space to lob Paul Gallacher.
Any chance they had of a second-half comeback was over on 56 when Ross Forbes scored the goal of the day, a 30-yard blockbuster that gave Gallacher absolutely no chance.
Lawless added a fifth 15 minutes from time and that was more than enough to see them take a three-point lead at the top of the table with their eighth win in 11 games.
