Hamilton brought Morton's eight-game unbeaten streak to an end with a 1-0 victory at Cappielow Park.
Accies had won just once this season but a 21st minute goal from Steven May proved enough to lift them four points clear of Division One's bottom side Dumbarton.
May collected a pass from Jonathan Routledge and fired past home keeper Derek Gaston from 20 yards.
Gaston made a superb save to deny Hamilton a second goal, May again the man inspiring the visitors as he headed Alister Crawford's free-kick goalwards.
Morton pressed for an equaliser after the break and Scott Taggart saw his fierce effort from the edge of the box saved by Kevin Cuthbert.
Cuthbert came to the rescue again in the closing seconds, holding a shot from Michael Tidser as Morton's late rally came up short - they are now seven points off leaders Partick who thrashed Dunfermline 5-1.
