Jean Makoun scores a late equaliser for Rennes
Jean Makoun scored late on to rescue a 2-2 draw for Rennes and deny Sochaux a second upset victory in two weeks.
Goals from Giovanni Sio and Sebastien Corchia in between John Boye's leveller for Rennes appeared to put the visitors in contention to follow up last weekend's 3-2 win over leaders Paris St Germain with another success.
But Makoun profited from a goalmouth scramble to poke home in the 87th minute and ensure the spoils were shared.
The draw denied Rennes the chance to leap above St Etienne, for a couple of hours at least, into fifth, while four points from an available six has lifted Eric Hely's men away from the relegation zone.
Sebastien Roudet was yesterday keen to point out Sochaux were not getting carried away by their triumph over PSG and the midfielder went close to breaking the deadlock early on, with his right-footed strike from the edge of the area forcing Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil into a decent save.
His opposite number Simon Pouplin was at full stretch to deny Mevlut Erding's snap shot and it proved a timely save when Sochaux launched a counter attack to break the deadlock.
Cedric Bakambu picked up the ball on the right and freed Sio, who drove into the box before firing past Costil in the 21st minute.
Rennes responded through another Erding's fierce drive from 25 yards, which Pouplin saved.
There was nothing Sochaux's goalkeeper could do when Boye headed the hosts level in the 33rd minute from Julien Feret's free-kick on the left.
There was a lull in the action immediately before and after half-time, but the game came to life once more when Corchia put Sochaux ahead in the 55th minute.
The full-back combined with Ryad Boudebouz on the right before dribbling into the area and firing into the top corner.
Boudebouz went close himself with a superb 25-yard volley, while Costil made a marvellous save from Bakambu's blast from outside the area.
Those misses would haunt Sochaux as Makoun brought Rennes level for the second time in the match, swooping home after the visitors failed to clear their lines from a corner.
