Live Commentary

This article updates itself. There is no need to refresh this page. Last Updated at 11:41 am, June 6th 2012

  1. Welbeck's chipped finish in the first half is the difference. England will head for Euro 2012 on the back of the 1-0 win over Belgium. Hodgson wins his first game in charge at Wembley and, on the back of the success over Norway by the same scoreline, will be a happy man. It was certainly not a memorable contest, but do not expect much different other than organisation, discipline and shape from a Hodgson-managed team.

  2. 90 + 4

  3. 90 + 3

Lukaku thinks he has broken through and is in on goal. But he is annoyed to look up and see an offside flag.

  4. 90 + 2

Fellaini forces a late save from Hart from 18 yards. The England goalkeeper had to dive down to his left and gathered the effort at the first attempt.

  5. 90 + 1

England's midfield is now very deep. They are almost on top of the defence. Defoe and Walcott are the only men up field.

  6. 90

ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of four minutes added time before the final whistle.

  7. 89

England, though are still looking to counter-attack. Walcott and Defoe again link up. Defoe sends his shot into the side-netting.

  8. 88

The game is limping towards its conclusion. I do not think there is any question Hodgson has managed to get his tactics across to the England players. This has been organised, and that is his trademark.

  9. 87

Big chance for Belgium at the corner. Vertonghen has a free header after poor marking from, of all people, Walcott. Luckily for England, the ball goes over the crossbar.

  10. 86

Johnson makes a bit of a mess of clearing a cross and sends the ball looping over his own crossbar. Corner to Belgium.

  11. 85

Man of the match nominations? Send them to or via Twitter to @SkySportsPeteF. My vote goes to Cole.

  12. 84

Hodgson will be happy if England finish the game with a 1-0 win. They have been effective if far from spectacular. But that is how he builds his team. The question is, would this sort of performance be enough to deal with the likes of France?

  13. 83

England and Liverpool captain Gerrard is replaced by club-mate Henderson, who was a late call up to the squad after Lampard's injury.

  14. 82

Defoe hits the post. Walcott drove forward towards the Belgium defence before laying off the ball to his team-mate. Defoe takes a touch inside the penalty area and then shoot across the face of goal. He is unfortunate to see the ball hit the far post and ricochet away.

  15. 81

Parker is unusually high up the field and almost meets Rooney's cross. Vermaelen is able to head clear.

  16. 80

Hart takes a chance with a touch with the ball at his feet inside his area. Lukaku is quickly putting him under pressure. England are pleased to see a foul awarded against Lukaku.

  17. 79

That was the closest Belgium have come. Lescott is now back on the pitch with his head bandaged.

  18. 78

Gillet smacks a first-time effort off the outside of Hart's right-hand post. Hart was beaten. He was watching the ball fly past.

  19. 77

Lescott is ordered to go off the pitch for treatment to a cut on the right-hand side of his face. He had blood on his shirt and will have to change his jersey.

  20. 76

Lukaku holds the ball up and manages to make space for a shot. Cole, though, produces a fantastic sliding block inside the penalty area to stop his club-mate's shot from hitting the target.

  21. 75

It is England's turn to exert a bit of pressure. Parker has the chance to cross and is just unable to get it past the near post.

  22. 74

Free-kick to England wide on the right. Gerrard bends the ball towards club-mate Johnson at the back post. Fellaini, though, just gets his head to the ball.

  23. 73

Lukaku has been very vocal about his lack of opportunities for Chelsea. Now is a chance for the striker to prove why Chelsea paid £18million for his services.

  24. 72

As I said earlier, Belgium have been lacking a striker. They send on Chelsea's Lukaku in place of Mertens.

  25. 71

'Oooohs' ring around Wembley as Rooney very nearly plays a pass to put Defoe clean through on goal.

  26. 70

Terry is off and replaced by Jagielka. Terry also heads straight down the tunnel.

  27. 69

Rooney gestures to England's midfield that they should have been pushing up after Defoe had charged down Belgium's defenders.

  28. 68

Belgium are not in any rush. They have exchanged at least 10 passes among their defenders. England are back an in shape and proving very difficult to break down.

  29. 67

This is an important 25 minutes for Walcott if he has aspirations towards getting into Hodgson's first XI.

  30. 66

Double change for England. Defoe and Walcott come on in place of Young and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

  31. 65

Oxlade-Chamberlain attempts to give England some inspiration when setting off on a run, but he is stopped by a tackle from Hazard.

  32. 64

Cole gives the ball to Mertens, who can again run towards the England penalty area. Gerrard risks hanging out a leg inside the 18-yard box, but just gets a toe to the ball.

  33. 63

This really has not been pretty to watch. England have offered very little as an attacking force, while Belgium's final ball or finishing has been a big disappointment. They are lacking an out-an-out striker.

  34. 62

Hart is forced to make two saves in the space of a minute. Firstly from Hazard's 20-yard curler and secondly from Fellaini's close-range turn and shot. Warnings for England.

  35. 61

Rooney gives the ball away and Mertens has the chance to run at the England defence. He is outnumbered and again his decision-making is a little poor.

  36. 60

Dembele twists and turns and attempts to make room for a shot from 20 yards. Parker and Milner, though, close down the Fulham man.

  37. 59

Mirallas is off and Nacer Chadli, who has been linked with Fulham, is on as his replacement.

  38. 58

Good tracking back from Oxlade-Chamberlain to take the ball off Mirallas. But Dembele is across to cover the teenager as he looks to charge forward.

  39. 57

The Belgian medical team, seemingly dressed in smart-casual, are on to treat Vermaelen. He is back on his feet, back on the pitch and fit to continue.

  40. 56

A nice touch from Milner sends the Manchester City man racing away in a foot race with Vermaelen. The Arsenal man gets to the ball first and, while sliding in to challenge, is caught by Milner's trailing leg.

  41. 55

Mertens choice of a final ball or a shot is again a disappointment as he sends a 25-yard shot drifting well wide.

  42. 54

Welbeck had not played since the end of April and he headed straight down the tunnel after going off. He might need a little treatment on his ankle.

  43. 53

Hodgson is sending on Rooney, who, do not forget, will be suspended for the first two games of Euro 2012. Welbeck is the man to go off. Will he have done enough to face France?

  44. 52

Mertens has been a constant source of explosive energy when he gets the ball at his feet. But he can sometimes look like he is running up a dead-end street.

  45. 51

Vertonghen, who is a centre-back but has been playing at left-back, cuts in from the flank and tries his luck from 25 yards. Clearly apprehensive about taking on a shot on his right, the defender scoops a tame long-ranger sailing well over the bar.

  46. 50

The second half has started in much the same style as the first. Both teams are failing to keep the ball for anything more than five passes.

  47. 49

England win another corner. Terry gets his head to the ball, but, under pressure from Fellaini, heads over the bar.

  48. 48

Young's delivery at the corner is headed away and he can then not prevent the ball from going out for a Belgium throw-in.

  49. 47

Corner to England after Vertonghen blocks Milner's cross.

  50. 46

The England team band give a blast of 'God Save the Queen' on the Jubilee Weekend.

  51. WE'RE BACK: England get the second half under way.

  52. Welbeck's well-taken goal is the difference at the break. England have hardly been inspiring, but they lead. Belgium have lacked a little team composure when it has been needed on the edge of the England box. Cahill went off early in the first half with a jaw injury, but it is not thought to be serious. Let me have your thoughts on the first half at or via Twitter @SkySportsPeteF.

  53. 45 + 2

  54. 45 + 1

Hazard is guilty of overdoing it a little on the edge of the England box and is tackled by Cole. Those two have had a good tussle this evening.

  55. 45

ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of two minutes added time before the break.

  56. 45

Two left-footed chances for Gerrard from the edge of the box after Milner did fantastically to keep the ball from crossing the byline. Gerrard, though, sees both efforts blocked by defenders.

  57. 44

Another break in play after a challenge from Cole on Fellaini. The latter has come off worse and his holding his collarbone. He is back on his feet and seems to be okay to continue.

  58. 43

Young looks to lead a counter-attack, but is caught and dispossessed by Witsel, who has been excellent so far.

  59. 42

England's midfield is now sitting in a deep line of four in front of the defence - a classic Hodgson tactic. They are now playing for half-time.

  60. 41

Hazard has given flashes of his ability. He is rapid with the ball, mobile and two-footed. He could be great acquisition for Chelsea.

  61. 40

Corner for Belgium. It is sent towards Fellaini, but is just too high and Terry can head clear up field.

  62. 39

Parker does have a habit of charging around like a headless chicken at times. He has a tendency to give the ball away and foul when there is a chance to hold possession.

  63. 38

Belgium will feel a little aggrieved to have gone behind. But they can have no complaints about the quality of Welbeck's finish. It was also a great pass from Young.

  64. Out of nothing, England take the lead. Gerrard robbed Dembele of the ball in midfield before passing to Young. The Manchester United man plays a lovely rolled pass into the path of his club-mate Welbeck, who then executes and wonderfully delicate, dinked finish over the onrushing Mignolet.

  65. 36

    GOAL WELBECK (1-0)!!!

  66. 35

Gerrard looks to the heavens after making a run off the back of Dembele and Oxlade-Chamberlain failed to execute the chipped pass. Replays suggest Gerrard would have been offside anyway.

  67. 34

Welbeck has hardly had a touch. He has had almost no service and will be frustrated if this is to be considered his Euro 2012 audition.

  68. 33

Gillet, though, blatantly pulls back Young to give England a free-kick. Young gets up to take the set-piece, but over-hits his attempted cross.

  69. 32

Hazard is then brought down by Cole, who could both be playing together at Chelsea. Belgium waste the free-kick and England try to counter-attack through Young.

  70. 31

Parker goes in the book for a late challenge on his potential new Tottenham team-mate Vertonghen.

  71. 30

Half-an-hour gone and England are not setting the world alight. They are struggling to string more than three passes together through midfield. Belgium are almost playing a man-for-man tactic.

  72. 29

Fellaini wins a towering header from a goal-kick over the top of Terry. Unfortunately for Belgium, no team-mate can latch onto the flick on and it rolls through to Hart.

  73. 28

There are a few paper aeroplanes being thrown onto the pitch from the stands at Wembley.

  74. 27

Hazard takes the free-kick and crosses into the box. The ball will not quite drop for Fellaini and England are able to clear for a corner, which they comfortably defend.

  75. 26

Johnson brings down Mertens on England's right and close to the corner flag. Free-kick to Belgium.

  76. 25

The substitution of Cahill, and the consequential break in play, has given Belgium a bit more of their early momentum.

  77. 24

England really are struggling to get any sort of rhythm going in their play.

  78. 23

Mirallas rolls the ball into the path of Witsel, who sends a 20-yarder whistling over Hart's crossbar. England's goalkeeper looked comfortable, but replays show it was very close.

  79. 22

Belgium are doing very well to squeeze England in central and wide areas in midfield. Hodgson's team are therefore having to go long towards Welbeck and Young which does not play to the forwards' strengths.

  80. 21

To be honest, all a bit forgettable so far. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been bright. But his finishing has been a little wayward.

  81. 20

After the break in play, England attack down the right. Milner has the chance to cross, but his low delivery does not beat the first man.

  82. 19

England have decided to replace Cahill, who is led off by the medical team, with Lescott. Probably just a precautionary measure. Cahill is okay to walk off the pitch.

  83. 18

It looks like Cahill is a bit groggy after his collision with Hart.

  84. 17

England's team of physios, who have been very busy over the past week, are on to check on Cahill.

  85. 16

Mertens is booked. Cahill was attempting to let the ball bounce back to Hart. There is a bit of hesitation and Mertens pushes Cahill into Hart before rolling the ball into the back of the net. It was a clear push and Cahill has taken quite a whack from Hart.

  86. 15

It is shaping up to be a good battle between Gerrard and Dembele in midfield. They are in close contact when either man is in possession.

  87. 14

Welbeck successfully chases a long ball, holds up the play and then tees up Oxlade-Chamberlain from 20 yards. The Arsenal teenager shots over the bar.

  88. 13

Mertens has caught the eye in the opening minutes with some nippy runs and his low centre of gravity. He looks to play a one-two with Mirallas, but the move breaks down.

  89. 12

Parker gives away a silly foul with a challenge from behind on Fellaini. The Tottenham midfielder was too keen to try and win the ball inside the England half.

  90. 11

Oxlade-Chamberlain spots a gap in the heart of midfield and looks to dart across the pitch. But he is sandwich and fouled by a combination of Witsel and Dembele.

  91. 10

Ten minutes gone and not a great deal to get excited about so far. Oxlade-Chamberlain's chance has been the best opportunity so far.

  92. 9

Belgium dominated the very early possession, but England are now beginning to come into the game.

  93. 8

Chance for Oxlade-Chamberlain. He meets Milner's driven, low cross on the edge of the box. But while attempting a first-time, right-foot shot, he loses his footing and the ball flies harmlessly wide of Mignolet's goal.

  94. 7

Gerrard flicks the ball over the head of Dembele before being fouled by his Premier League rival. Free-kick to England close to the halfway line.

  95. 6

It is a bit something of nothing at the set-piece. Belgium take the corner short and Cahill can head away Hazard's delivery.

  96. 5

Hazard is playing at the pinnacle of the Belgium attack, but they are all rotating positions. Corner to Belgium.

  97. 4

Parker dives in on Fellaini and misses the ball to allow the Belgium man to roll the challenge. Parker is off the hook as Fellaini fails to capitalise when carrying the ball towards the edge of the England box.

  98. 3

It looked like Cole was hobbling a little bit after an early challenge. But England's left-back seems to be okay.

  99. 2

Terry reads a Belgium attack and slides a challenge to take the ball off Fellaini and leave the Everton star on the floor.

  100. 1

Early touches for all of England's defenders before Hart lumps the ball up field and gives possession back to Belgium.

  101. KICK-OFF: Belgium get the game going

  102. 17.13

England are in all white. Belgium are in their away kit of all black.

  103. 17.11

Pre-match handshakes and then the national anthems. Get a sweepstake going for which England players consider it 'cool', or not, to sing.

  104. 17.07

Here come the teams. Respective captains Gerrard and Vermaelen lead out England and Belgium from the Wembley tunnel.

  105. 17.02

Don't forget as well, goalline technology is on trial at Wembley for today's match. Are you in favour of the technology? Drop me a 'line' at or via Twitter @SkySportsPeteF.

  106. 16.59

Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen will now skipper Belgium at Wembley.

  107. 16.57

The FA has announced a change to the Belgium team. Vincent Kompany comes out for Timmy Simons.

  108. 16.55

In regular time, England are unbeaten in 10 meetings with Belgium since the Second World War (W6 D4, one of these draws ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat). Overall, Belgium have managed just two wins against England: 3-2 in May 1936 and 0-0 (4-3 on penalties) in May 1998 (D4 L14).

  109. 16.42

If, and it is a big if, England went all the way at Euro 2012 and he played all the games, Ashley Cole would win his 100th cap in the final.

  110. 16.38

Let's not forget about Belgium. A common phrase among football fans over the past week has been, 'Belgium have actually got quite a good team'. Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know to watch out for Chelsea-bound Hazard. Belgium's side also includes the familiar Premier League faces of Mignolet, Kompany, Vermaelen, Fellaini and Dembele. Defender Vertonghen also looks set to join Tottenham. Chelsea's Lukaku is on Belgium's bench.

  111. 16.35

After losing experienced midfield duo Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard to injury in the last seven days, Hodgson's chief hope will be to avoid further fitness concerns just nine days before England's Euro 2012 campaign begins.

  112. 16.33

The same cannot be said of Danny Welbeck though, hence his starting berth for today's game, to allow Hodgson to make a fair judgement between the Manchester United man and Andy Carroll, another to have a decent game in Norway. There must be concerns about Welbeck's fitness. He has not played since the end of April. Are you worried? Get in touch at or via Twitter @SkySportsPeteF.

  113. 16.32

In addition, captain Steven Gerrard, midfield partner Scott Parker and - in the absence of Wayne Rooney who is suspended for England's opening two games - Ashley Young, can also be reasonably certain of their spots.

  114. 16.30

Oxlade-Chamberlain is one of seven changes from the win in Norway, with the entire defence altered, in addition to the return of first-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart. It would seem defence comprising Chelsea trio John Terry, Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill, along with Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson, is the one earmarked to face France.

  115. 16.28

Arsenal teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is making his first senior start for England. Are you pleased? He made his debut in Norway last week but Hodgson is eager to see more of the 18-year-old ahead of England's Euro 2012 opener against France in Donetsk on 11th June.

  116. 16.23

A few people have been getting in touch to say they are glad to see Downing dropped to the bench. A statistic for you. Downing has the most international assists out of England's Euro 2012 squad. He averages one assist every 185 minutes, which, incredibly, is the best England can manage.

  117. 16.14

Belgium team: Mignolet, G Gillet, Vertonghen, Simons, Vermaelen (c), Mertens, Witsel, Mirallas, Hazard, Fellaini, Dembele. Subs: Renard, De Camargo, Pocognoli, Chadli, Benteke, Vossen, Lukaku, Odoi, Nainggolan, De Ceulaer, Defour.

  118. 16.10

England team: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck. Subs: Jones, Green, Baines, Lescott, Jagielka, Henderson, Downing, Defoe, Rooney, Carroll, Walcott, Butland.
