Beavon: Hat-trick hero
Stuart Beavon helped himself to a hat-trick as Wycombe saw off Bristol Rovers 3-1 in their JPT first-round home clash.
Matt Harrold pulled one back for the visitors but the Chairboys held on to snap a three-game losing streak and set up a second-round Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at home to Cheltenham.
The hosts made the perfect start when Rovers defender Michael Smith's tackle fell kindly for Beavon to stroke home from the edge of the area after eight minutes.
Wycombe goalkeeper Nikki Bull wasn't really tested until 10 minutes after the break when he superbly tipped Scott McGleish's acrobatic volley around the post.
Just a minute later Wycombe doubled their lead, Kevin Betsy cutting in from the left to set up Beavon whose low drive from 25 yards found the bottom corner.
Harrold latched on to a long ball to reduce the deficit with a calm finish for his fourth goal of the season moments later but Beavon's third goal with 15 minutes left extended Rovers' search for a win to four games.
