Late Dawson goal sinks Rovers

A goal deep into added time by Leyton Orient captain Steve Dawson clinched a dramatic 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers.

It also secured a Carling Cup third-round tie at Blackburn having seen first-half goals by David Mooney and Ben Chorley cancelled out by strikes from Chris Zebroski and Eliot Richards after the break. Mooney opened the scoring after 18 minutes when he seized onto a through ball from Dean Cox and sublimely lobbed advancing goalkeeper Scott Bevan to net from 18 yards. Then five minutes later, the O's doubled their lead when the tireless Mooney was upended in the penalty box by Wayne Brown and Chorley stepped forward to convert the spot-kick with precision. Rovers pulled a goal back after 69 minutes when Zebroski jinked past three defenders to send an unstoppable drive past O's keeper David Button from 15 yards and then, as the fourth official was raising the board to indicate five minutes of added time, Richards pounced on a loose ball in the Orient area to level. However, the home side broke out of defence and Dawson ended a three-man move by coolly slotting past Rovers keeper Scott Bevan.
