Grimes double sinks Spireites

Ashley Grimes bagged a brace as Rochdale twice came from behind to beat Chesterfield 3-2 at Spotland.

Chesterfield started brightly, with midfielder Danny Whitaker sending a header straight at David Lucas in the third minute. Whitaker was celebrating shortly afterwards, collecting a pass from Scott Boden and slotting past the keeper. The Spireites' lead did not last long, though, as a great run from Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro ended with the forward cutting the ball back for Grimes who slammed home. Lucas did well to block a Boden shot from close in after 55 minutes while Chesterfield keeper Tommy Lee kept out a fierce drive from Grimes. The game went into extra time and it took just five minutes for the visitors to go ahead. Joe Widdowson brought down Jack Lester in the area and Whitaker fired his penalty low into the centre of goal. It was all square again after 103 minutes when Dwayne Mattis inadvertently turned a cross past his own keeper. Joe Thompson headed over with the goal gaping but Dale did snatch a winner when Grimes lashed a Widdowson cross into the top corner from six yards.
