Clarke: Feeling at home already

Clarke: Feeling at home already

Leon Clarke scored on his home debut to earn Chesterfield a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Bury at the b2net Stadium.

The on-loan Swindon striker struck for the second game running midway through the second half, but substitute Mark Cullen fluffed a glorious chance to save the Shakers from a fifth consecutive League One defeat.

The Spireites made all the running without creating a clear chance until Clarke put Scott Boden in a minute before the interval, only for Trevor Carson to make an excellent save.

The home side continued to control the game in the second half and were rewarded when a low cross fell to Clarke, who placed a left-foot shot past Carson from 12 yards.

Bury had hardly threatened but a double change almost paid off when, first, Giles Coke forced Tommy Lee into a sharp save in the 73rd minute before Cullen somehow missed from three yards after the goalkeeper failed to hold a low cross.

Lee's 200th league start ended early when he went off injured six minutes from time but Chesterfield still kept a third successive clean sheet for the first time under manager John Sheridan.
