Live Commentary

Last Updated at 4:57 pm, January 14th 2012

  1. Fletcher's first-half goal was cancelled out Modric's second-half equaliser. Spurs lose ground in the title race after failing to fully close the gap to Manchester City. Wolves, in contrast, secure a precious point in their battle to avoid relegation. Stay with us for all the post-match reaction.

  2. 90 + 6

  3. 90 + 5

Free-kick to Spurs 25 yards from goal. Last chance. Bale takes it, but curls over the bar.

  4. 90 + 3

Hunt is a relieved man after getting an attempted headed clearance all wrong. It turns into a good header back to Hennessey.

  5. 90 + 2

Free-kick to Wolves, which they take their time over before hitting it long into the Tottenham half.

  6. 90

ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of five minutes added time before the final whistle.

  7. 90

Referee Jones bizarrely decides it is a drop ball inside the Wolves box as a result of the collision between Hennessey and Johnson. Spurs contest the ball, but give away a foul. The referee takes the easy way out.

  8. 89

All of Wolves' players are back inside their own half. Van der Vaart sends a cross into the box. But this time Hennessey's handling is sound. He clatters into Johnson and both players go down. Not convinced the extent of their injuries. This could be a time-wasting tactic.

  9. 88

This time Van der Vaart gets in the way of Parker, who was about to latch onto a cross inside the penalty area after arriving late. That has summed up Tottenham's afternoon.

  10. 87

Wolves are now camped on the edge of their own box. This would be a hugely important point for McCarthy, who has come under some pressure this week.

  11. 86

McCarthy is shutting up shop, as George Elokobi comes on in place of Jarvis. Elokobi goes to left-back and Ward pushes into midfield.

  12. 85

Modric hits another long-ranger wide of the target. His goal has been the only one of several efforts which has gone where the playmaker has aimed.

  13. 84

Henry goes on the book for a wild lunge on Modric in the middle of the pitch. Correct decision.

  14. 83

Van der Vaart's free-kick was possibly curling in at the far post. But Johnson produces a captain's header to clear the danger.

  15. 82

Walker charges forward and wins a corner. Berra dives in on Kaboul on the opposite byline after the set-piece is taken. Free-kick to Spurs.

  16. 81

Horrible from Hunt, who, under no pressure, passes straight to Walker.

  17. 80

Spurs introduce Danny Rose in place of Assou-Ekotto. Wolves send on Nenad Milijas as a replacement for Edwards, who returns from suspension after that harsh red card at Arsenal.

  18. 79

It is almost an immediate impact from Defoe. After Adebayor is tackled, Defoe follows up and his left-footed effort can only be deflected away by Hennessey. From the corner, Assou-Ekotto blasts over the crossbar.

  19. 78

Nice from Wolves, as the keep hold of the ball for a few passes. Parker, though, intercepts.

  20. 77

Modric has his hands on his head. He tried to thread a pass through to Adebayor, but the striker does not read his team-mate's thoughts. There was too much on the pass, anyway, and it is an easy pick up for Hennessey.

  21. 76

Much to the annoyance of Spurs fans, Hennessey is taking his time over a free-kick after an offside decision.

  22. 75

This could be a long final 15 minutes for Wolves. McCarthy's men are struggling to keep hold of the ball when they get it forward towards Fletcher and it is becoming one-way traffic.

  23. 74

After Walker smashes a volley over the crossbar, Defoe comes on as a replacement for Lennon.

  24. 73

Spurs are getting ready to bring on Defoem who has been linked with a move away in January.

  25. 72

It has not been Bale's best afternoon. He is apologising to his team-mates after cutting inside and selfishly going for goal from 25 yards only to blast high and wide.

  26. 71

Spurs captain Dawson meets the set-piece, but blazes well over the crossbar on the volley.

  27. 70

Now Wolves are frustrated to have had a corner given against them when it should have been a goal-kick.

  28. 69

Assou-Ekotto is rightly booked for pulling the shirt, and shorts, of Kightly.

  29. 68

A rare stray pass from Parker brings groans from White Hart Lane, as he sells Walker short.

  30. 67

As predicted, McCarthy decides to replace Frimpong for his own good. Stephen Hunt is coming on.

  31. 66

Van der Vaart takes the resulting free-kick, but his left-footed curler is wide of the target and Hennessey had it covered all the way.

  32. 65

Another foul from Frimpong, who is now surely only one away from a second booking. He trips Lennon 25 yards from the Wolves goal.

  33. 64

Fletcher is set up after some excellent work by Henry. But his cross is claimed by Friedel. Spurs do not clear the ball far and Walker eventually shows composure to head back to his goalkeeper.

  34. 63

Adebayor and Van der Vaart get in the way of each other when attempting to meet Bale's headed knock-back. Spurs are claiming a high boot and penalty against Ward in the clearance, but the referee is not interested.

  35. 62

Brilliant header from Parker in midfield to keep possession for Spurs. He climbed above Henry when showing more determination to win the ball.

  36. 61

Signs of nerves from Hennessey, as the giant goalkeeper fumbles Walker's hanging cross when only challenging with the shorter Van der Vaart.

  37. 60

The rotation in Spurs' midfield is always very impressive to watch. Wolves are struggling to pick up runners at the moment.

  38. 59

Assou-Ekotto aims to play a one-two after being given a pass from Modric, however, his return toward the Croatian has a little too much power.

  39. 58

It is as if Parker has never been away. He has returned to his usual high standards and has been excellent in his usual, quietly effective role.

  40. 57

Tottenham's fans, who were a little frustrated in the first half, are now in fine voice.

  41. 56

Bale's superb pass releases Walker down the right. He crosses low towards Adebayor, but the striker runs over the ball in the assumption there is a team-mate following up. But Ward can clear.

  42. 55

Kaboul might as well not bother going back into defence and save a bit of his energy. This time he is on the right, but his cross is into the hands of Hennessey.

  43. 54

Hennessey redeems himself to an extent, with a reflex save to deny Lennon from point-blank range after a scramble in the box.

  44. 53

Repeating myself, but another surge forward from Kaboul. He never really looks in control of the ball and runs it out of play.

  45. 52

The equaliser has, obviously, given Spurs a massive lift and they are now charging forward at every chance.

  46. Cruel on Wolves, as Spurs move straight up the other end of the field and find their equaliser. Modric's excellent low shot from the edge of the box creeps under the body of Hennessey, who will feel he should have done better.

  47. 50

    GOAL MODRIC (1-1)!!!

  48. 49

Vitally important save from Friedel to deny Frimpong on the volley. It is a comfortable height, but still a stop Friedel had to make. There is enough in this to suggest a second goal for Wolves.

  49. 48

Shocking finish from Bale, who blazes it miles over the crossbar from the edge of the box after being set up by the advanced Assou-Ekotto.

  50. 47

I'll be amazed if Frimpong lasts the duration of this game. He commits another foul which could have been a second booking. McCarthy is either going to have to substitute him or he will be sent off.

  51. 46

Not the start Spurs were looking for, as Lennon's attempted pass down the wing goes out for a throw-in.

  52. WE'RE BACK: Tottenham, who are hoping to avoid what would be just a second league loss in 19 games, get the second half under way.

  53. Unfortunately for Tottenham, the tactic of having Kaboul as a spare attacking man has not paid off. The centre-back has demonstrated why he is a defender. On his breaks forward from defence, he has either wasted crosses or shots.

  54. Fletcher's goal from a Wolves corner, which should have been a goal-kick after Edwards got the last touch in a challenge with Walker, gives McCarthy's team a shock lead at White Hart Lane. Spurs have dominated possession, but cannot find a way past a very well organised visiting defence. Lots for Redknapp to think about, or Spurs will miss the chance to move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

  55. 45 + 4

  56. 45 + 3

Van der Vaart is very lucky to avoid a yellow card after intentionally tripping Johnson out of frustration on the edge of the Wolves box.

  57. 45 + 2

Frimpong runs into the Tottenham box with the ball and, as Kaboul backs off, tries a shot. But Kaboul springs forward and tackles.

  58. 45 + 1

Free-kick to Tottenham wide on the right. Van der Vaart aims to whip the ball into the box, but puts too much on it and it is in the hands of Hennessey.

  59. 45

ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of three minutes added time before half-time.

  60. 44

Spurs think they have their equaliser, but Adebayor is offside after tapping in following Bale's initial shot. It is the correct decision, replays confirm.

  61. 43

Kaboul again has the ball in an attacking area. He tries a shot from the edge of the box, but it is straight into the hands of Hennessey.

  62. 42

Wolves have defended very well today. McCarthy has them organised and with a distinct game plan. Spurs are struggling to break them down, despite a lot of possession.

  63. 41

After Parker lost possession on the edge of the Wolves box, the visitors break forward. Kightly cuts inside Assou-Ekotto and shots from 20 yards. But his shot was never on target and goes well wide of the goal.

  64. 40

Van der Vaart is now dropping a little deeper into his own half to go in search of the ball.

  65. 39

Another attack from Kaboul down the left. But his attempt at a pass down the wing to Bale is absolutely dreadful and he only succeeds in sending the ball out for a Wolves' goal-kick.

  66. 38

Tottenham's fans need to keep their patience. There are a few grumbles around White Hart Lane. Grinding out results from these sort of situations are all a part of title races.

  67. 37

What a waste from Edwards! The midfielder makes a mess of a great chance inside the penalty area when latching on to a Jarvis cross. Edwards looks to open his body and side-foot a finish towards the far post, but he pushes the effort well wide. That was a let off for Spurs.

  68. 36

Wolves look to break, but Jarvis cannot control the ball and it is a throw-in.

  69. 35

Typical tracking back from Parker, who takes the ball away from Fletcher with the minimum of fuss inside the Spurs half.

  70. 34

Spurs are persistently looking to attack down the left and Bale is wondering across the field in order to create room for his team-mates.

  71. 33

The corner is again a bit of a waste. But Spurs keep the pressure on. Modric, though, hits a left-foot volley straight at Hennessey from the edge of the box.

  72. 32

Spurs win another corner after a Van der Vaart volley pings off Johnson. Adebayor got an excellent flick on the ball in the build-up.

  73. 31

Kaboul goes on another dart up the pitch to try and give Spurs an extra man in attack. He again makes his way up the left wing and gets to the byline. But he overruns the ball and cannot cross before running it out of play.

  74. 30

Frimpong slides into the back of Bale. He got a touch on the ball, but it was wild challenge. He is booked and his dissenting reaction probably earns the caution as much as anything. He needs to calm down.

  75. 29

Modric and Van der Vaart do not appear to have their shooting boots on today, as the latter sends another one into the stands.

  76. 28

Replays have just shown Edwards got the final touch on the ball before the corner from which Wolves took the lead. It should have been a goal-kick.

  77. 27

Modric's delivery from the set-piece is poor and Wolves are able to defend at the near post.

  78. 26

Stephen Ward defends well against Lennon, but gives away a corner.

  79. 25

Spurs will know it is vital they respond quickly and Modric is looking to pull the strings.

  80. From the contentious decision to award Wolves a corner, the visitors equalise. After Johnson's initial header is brilliantly saved by Friedel, Fletcher pounces from the close-range follow-up.

  81. 22

    GOAL WOLVES (0-1)!!!

  82. 22

Wolves move up the other end of the field and Walker allows the ball to roll out thinking it is a goal-kick, but the match officials give a corner.

  83. 21

Spurs are beginning to build a bit of pressure. Modric has a chance to set his sights from 25 yards. However, he shoots well wide when under pressure from Karl Henry.

  84. 20

Another corner to Spurs, this time on their right-hand side. Van der Vaart takes it short and gets in a bit of a mess with Modric, which allows Wolves to clear.

  85. 19

A Bale shot from 20 yards is deflected for a Spurs corner, Van der Vaart takes the set-piece, but it is over-hit.

  86. 18

Kaboul charges forward out of defence and plays in Adebayor down the inside left. Adebayor squares a pass from the byline, but the ball is just behind Luka Modric.

  87. 17

Ironic cheers from the travelling contingent of Wolves fans, as Parker punts an attempted pass out of play. But Berra then does likewise and the Tottenham supporters return the cat calls.

  88. 16

Wolves will be pleased with their start. They have offered very little going forward and are happy to drop off to the halfway line when Spurs are in possession. But Hennessey has yet to be genuinely tested.

  89. 15

Van der Vaart, holding his no doubt still stinging face, is back on the pitch after going off for treatment.

  90. 14

I believe the term is, 'ooof'. Van der Vaart takes a ball smack in the face after Frimpong attempted to take a clearance. Van der Vaart is back on his feet.

  91. 13

Walker and Lennon are causing Wolves a few problems down the right. The former's cross is just too long for Bale at the back post.

  92. 12

Parker looks to return a pass to Adebayor inside the penalty area with a back-heel. But the Wolves defence intercepts and Parker then gives away a free-kick.

  93. 11

It has been a bit of a stop-start beginning to the match. We are still waiting for the game to settle into any sort of pattern.

  94. 10

Kightly leads a Wolves attack and looks to take on Assou-Ekotto, who may perhaps not be fully fit just yet. But the Wolves midfielder's cross-shot deflects into the hands of Friedel.

  95. 9

Assou-Ekotto hobbles to the sidelines, but he looks like he will be okay to continue and is back on the pitch.

  96. 8

Michael Kightly leaves Assou-Ekotto in a heap with a sliding tackle and the Tottenham full-back is now receiving treatment. These breaks in play are disrupting Spurs' rhythm.

  97. 7

Christophe Berra is receiving treatment on his right shoulder after a nasty fall when winning a header against Emmanuel Adebayor. He is back on his feet and then back on the field.

  98. 6

Jarvis does well down the left for Wigan, when holding off Kyle Walker and Parker, but his cross rolls into the hands of Brad Friedel.

  99. 5

Spurs are into their trademark early groove. They have lost just one league game in 18 and it is easy to see why. Modric drags a shot just wide from the edge of the box.

  100. 4

Shouts of 'shoot' meet Benoit Assou-Ekotto when he gets the ball 20 yards from goal following his screamer against Everton. But the full-back instead opts to pass.

  101. 3

Sloppy from Younes Kaboul on the edge of his own box and he almost gifts the ball to Fletcher. But he is able to recover.

  102. 2

Wolves midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong gets an early touch and the on-loan Arsenal man is roundly booed by White Hart Lane.

  103. 1

Wolves immediately play the ball back to Wayne Hennessey, who lumps a long pass up the field. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

  104. KICK-OFF: Wolves get the game going.

  105. 14.58

Steven Pienaar via his official twitter account: "In bed sick with tonsillitis unbelievable luck. Disappointed I felt good against Everton."

  106. 14.57

Here come the teams. Tottenham and Wolves emerge from the tunnel and prepare to go through the pre-match handshakes. Dawson captains Spurs and Johnson leads Wolves.

  107. 14.52

Wolves have now also made their way back to away dressing room. Kick-off is less than 10 minutes away. Thanks for all your pre-match emails and tweets and I apologise if I have not been able to publish all of the comments. You can continue to get in touch at or via twitter @SkySportsPeteF.

  108. 14.49

The last time I covered Tottenham was at Norwich over the festive season. Spurs were hugely impressive that day and if they play anything like they did that day, Wolves could be in trouble.

  109. 14.47

Tottenham have now completed their warm-up and headed back down the tunnel to receive a few final words from Redknapp in the comfort of the home dressing room.

  110. 14.45

With 15 minutes to go to kick-off, both teams are going through the final stages of their pre-match warm-up routines on the pitch at White Hart Lane.

  111. 14.40

If you fancy a flutter, Sky Bet say: "Tottenham can go level with Manchester City this afternoon and are 1/4 to claim the necessary three points with Wolves 12/1 to play spoilers and the draw available at 9/2. Gareth Bale is 6/4 to score at White Hart Lane."

  112. 14.39

    Today's referee is Mike Jones

  113. 14.28

Here is a round-up of the team news. England midfielder Parker returns to the Tottenham team for the first time in three games, replacing Jake Livermore in the hosts' only change from the side that beat Everton 2-0 on Wednesday night. Wolves make six changes to the team that was held to a goalless draw against local rivals Birmingham in the FA Cup third round last weekend, with top goalscorer Steven Fletcher coming back into the side. There are also recalls for goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, Kevin Foley, on-loan Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, David Edwards and Matt Jarvis.

  114. With Manchester City not in action until Monday evening, Third-placed Tottenham can go joint top of the Premier League if they win this afternoon. Wolves, meanwhile, sit in 16th place and just one point clear of the relegation zone.

  115. 14.14

What do you make of the team news? Scott Parker is the only change for Tottenham. Steven Fletcher returns for Wolves. Drop me a line via email or on twitter.
